Just bought a Remington 870, practically brand new, probably doesn't have 20 shots through it. Came with a 28" barrel, he put an 18.5" on it, Wilson Combat magazine extension, (installed by a local smith), wood grip/stock. As is, fits me just fine, the wife on the other hand...she's 4' 11", 'bout 100lbs. She has shot a 12 gauge before, not scared of it. I'm trying to figure the best way to fit us both. Better for me to adapt to a smaller gun than her to adapt to a bigger one, so first thought, cut down the stock to fit her and hope I'm fine with it. I found a 'traditional' re-coil absorbing stock, Blackhawk with adjustable 'pull'. I don't know how easy the adjustment is to go back and forth quickly, also don't know well it absorbs the 'kick', not super worried about the 'kick' except when we attend a class, then it'll matter! I've seen several tactical stocks, shock absorbing and quickly adjustable, the price range from about $90-$250, seems like a huge difference, hopefully someone can tell me why. I'm not real concerned with having a wood grip and black tactical stock, might actually look good, what do ya'll think?

For a collapsible stock, look at the Mesa Tactical LEO adapter. It's aluminum, solid, and if you've got the other parts (grip, stock, castle nut, and buffer tube) it's only $60. Otherwise, it's $165ish (everywhere I've seen it's about $165) for everything.

Its easier for a larger person to adapt to a shorter stock then it is for a smaller person to adapt to a to long stock, especially on a HD slug gun. I don't like the M4 type stocks on a shotgun. I put a youth stock on our bedroom shotgun, it fits the wife better and I have no problem adapting to it.

Jeff, I agree with me adapting to a smaller gun than her adapting to a larger one. I'm ASSuming when you mention the M4 stock that you mean any 'tactical' style. Is your dislike subjective or objective? I've seen a 'traditional' style stock from Blackhawk that is recoil absorbing and adjustable, don't know how quickly the adjustment can be made. What I do know is that the gun as is, the stock needs to be shortened for her, she keeps catching the stock when bringing it up to her shoulder.

Mesa tactical. The reason some are $250 is because nothing in the world tames recoil like the recoil buffer that comes in mesa's recoil reducing kit.

At $250 for a tactical stock, or really at any amount, think about buying another used 870. Well worth it to keep life simple and avoid fiddling with the gun in between shooters during classs or having to remember to leave it set a certain way at home.

Your wife may also appreciate an 870 without the weight of the mag extension hanging out toward the front end.

Also for class, no need to get beat up with full load shells when reduced loads are available in bird shot and in buck shot.

I paid out the nose for a nice magpul collapsible stock and magpul pistol grip, ended up selling the parts off and finding a soldering ironed-stippled factory synthetic unit for 25 bucks and couldn't be happier for a working gun.

Its subjective and objective, I didn't like being subjected to the objective recoil when I tried one shooting slugs. I like a more traditional stock on a shotgun, I also really like the Remington Sure-shot stock on one of my slug guns. When you throw that bad boy up to your shoulder you are looking right down the rifle sights on the slug barrel. Its fast and about as tactical as I want on a shotgun. Its length of pull is probably to long for what you need though
