Put a S&W M632 327 Federal on layaway. Now to find brass..?

So I was in Cabelas the other day, and there was this lonely 632 in the display case with a "clearance" sign & what I think is a great price for any stainless Smith, $549. I've been looking for a J frame to carry, and being a handloader have been pretty interested in a 327. So, I said why not & put it on layaway. The grips actually feel good in my big hands, it points very naturally, the lockup is tight, and the trigger was very nice for a NIB gun.



Reading around it seems that those who have one love it, and those who don't think there's no need for it. I've got other 38s & 357s so this is a compliment, not a replacement. I know that these may go the way of the dodo so I'd kick myself years down the road for not picking up one of the only ones I've ever seen for sale! That's how I feel about the S&W M940 & M646.

The thing is, after I got home I started looking for a source of brass so I can stock pile some for down the road. I've got an email into Starline to see if they are going to make any more, and who knows with the Federal brass- everyone is out. If I can't find a brass stash should I reconsider picking this gun up? It's kind of in the back of my mind..

I did hear from Starline, they're saying 8-10 weeks. So that plus all the info above, they're available. I don't mind waiting. I'm excited! This'll give me a J, K, L & N frame. I used to have an X frame and while it would have been nice to keep for posterity, I don't really regret trading it off.

Anyone know if there's any truth to the Smith 327 frames being heat treated to be stronger than their lower pressure counterparts?

I ended up finding brass at Grafs, I'm all set up now after waiting 10 days for my background check.... :\ Can't wait to try this caliber on for size. Planning on trying loads with AA9, 100gr XTPs & Federal small rifle primers.

Anyone know if the HKS speedloaders for the Ruger 327 fit the Smith? It's not called out in the product description.

Range report! Got to put some lead down range today. It was 22° out so I didn't stay out too long

First the Federal 85gr Hydrashocks. They were definitely lower blast & recoil. Next the American Eagle 85gr loads. Much more blasty. Finally the American Eagle 100gr loads. They felt a little more stout than the 85gr version, but I expected them to be a lot more stout. The primers in the 100gr loads were more flattened than I would like to see however none of the brass had any extraction difficulties. I don't think I'll shoot these when it's cooking hot outside..

All that said, none were especially accurate for me. I'm looking forward to handloads. I'd also like to try the Gold Dots if I can ever find any.

For under $300 I'd snag it, if nothing else it's a gun you can shoot 5 calibers in. Try that with a bottom feeeder!

I'm real happy with the Smith overall. There is one issue, the hammer has a little lateral movement & if it floats left it hangs up on a notch in the frame. I think a file to the corner in question will solve this. Also, if I had my druthers I'd chop off the port & re-crown it but that's pretty low priority. From such a small gun the port does produce a little powder back to the face.
