I know not many of you are into this rifle building stuff. But, for the few who are, I hope you're enjoying this series.

This is a mini update on the TOW Bucks county flintlock rifle kit build. It is kind of out of sequence with the rest of the videos. so I broke it out on its own.

It covers draw filing the barrel. Typically I only draw file and polish the top three barrel flats. But for this build I did the bottom obliques and the side flats. I'll do the top later.

I've been complaining that the barrel was tight in the channel, and I was blaming it on the stock. I finally got around to measuring the 13/16th Colerain barrel I'm using.

True 13/16ths is 0.8125 inches. This barrel is 0.8245 inches. I measured a couple of Green Mountain barrels from rifles I built 20 years ago and they measured 0.8145.

So the Colerain barrel is a little fat.

Here's my draw filing procedure...

Thanx for this vid Mike. I wasn't aware that Brownell's carried a draw specific file.I needs one !
Did you know that if you add some chalk to yer file it helps it to not load as fast as without it ?

Hi Jim. I do know that. I was out of chalk when I filmed that. I stopped at the hardware store yesterday and bought a big hunk of chalk...35 cents worth...LOL

Very interesting video, BTW I just completed a Lyman GPR, using one of Brownell's Draw files just to get the "Shoot Only Black Powder/Read Owners Manual Prior to Shooting" off of it. Naturally I ended up doing the entire barrel, now mind ya I didn't have to dovetail the barrel for the sights, as that was allready done. Looks like yer headed in the right direction.:D

Hey Mike or Noose. Do either of you guys happen to the part number fer that Brownell's draw file ? I just went to thier site to order one and caint find it

I really don't like thier website.
But now thier catalog .............
That's a downright economical danger in my hands :D

080-512-000AE Brownell's draw file

It is on page 446 of my catalog (#64).

I can't find anything on their web site either. I always pull out the catalog to ind what I need, then go to the web site to order it.

Just checked the web site and can't find it...maybe they discontinued it.

I don't recall you indicating that any measuring of the barrel flats was done during the draw filing process. Then how would one know to stop from filing too far below the barrel channel dimension if one's not measuring the progress?
In some cases, wouldn't it safer to only take down the high spots on the opposite flats of the barrel and then to check the dimensions before taking off all of the blue dye? Or in your case are you supposing that draw filing simply isn't easily capable of taking off more of the barrel flats than desired?

Articap, the purpose of draw filing is to make the flats truly flat. To do that you need to bring the high points down to the low points and level everything out. The depth of metal you take off is generally pretty small, so I wasn't worried about making the barrel too narrow. But, if I had, I'd have glass bedded the sides of the channel to fill in the gaps.
