An older gentleman was walking around w/ 3 pistol rugs @ the gun show. I asked what he had.

A 625 Mountain Gun (I already have one of those I bought NIB)

A 3" Lew Horton .44 Special

A very clean 624 4" .44 Special from the mid-80's! I bought this one.

Very nice. I'm quite jealous actually. Nice find on a fairly rare one (at least round my parts)

Green with envy.
Nice find.
I never seem to see 24s or 624s in GA.

I think you should have bought the Lew Horton and sent it to me.
What in the hell kind of friend are you, anyway? ;)

If the LH .44 Special was stainless I'd get that to.

But yes, the 4 inch 624 I'd have gotten it first.

I love .44 Spl and .45 Colt.
I'd love to have that .45 Colt Mountain Gun.
With a good trigger job, an N frame Smith is capable of an unbelievable trigger pull.

It seems everyone else is finding great deals on guns.
Then, I remember the great deals I've found. I guess it evens out. :)

To the legion of 44 Special fans a 4" N-frame chambered for the Special rather than the Magnum is near perfect. Stainless vs blue is a matter of taste. Most 44 fans probably own at least one of each. (smile)

Oh yes! I had a choice several years ago between a 4" 624 and a 629MG, both had been tuned by Bob Munden. I went with the 629 and have never regretted it but still REALLY want a nice 4" 24 or even better, a 1950 Target. Found a NIB 6½" a couple years ago but still looking for a 4" at a decent price. Wonderful, underrated sixguns!

You should have left out the first sentence below the header. It was honey for the gun grabbers.
You still should edit it out.

Very nice. I have one exactly like it, except that I replaced the oversized target grips with Magnas. Mine is SN AHC04XX and it shipped in September of 1985. Except for a 617, this is the newest Smith I own.

Yes, these guns are delightful to shoot. No need for the heavy 44 Mag when all you want to shoot is 44 Specials. Recoil is light enough that I replaced the larger grips with the Magnas and I can shoot it all day long without a problem with the smaller grips.

Now here's the bad news. S&W got a bad batch of steel about the time these were being made. Some have cylinders made from steel that was not up to spec. You might want to call Smith and Wesson and tell them the serial number. They can tell you whether or not yours has the bad steel. I called and mine is OK.

Sweet .44 Special! Would love to have one to go with my Ruger Flattop.

When I worked at a gun store in the mid 80's I had a chance to buy one of these. I believe it was selling for about $329.00 I sure screwed up. But being very young I sure did learn my lesson.
I thin the 44 special is the "it" caliber. I love the caliber. I have a Taurus 431 and a Rossi 720. Both are my ccw weapons. Love to load for it, and to shoot it. The gun and round will do the job if I do mine. The S&W 624 is awesome. I would have chosen that over the Lew Horton any day. You did very well. Congrat's!!!!!

Great gun, the 624. Have had mine a long time and as everyone has indicated, it's about as good as it gets. Mine wears Pachmayr but Driftwood's pics are making me rethink that. If I had to keep only two handguns, the 624 would be #2. But let's not go there. :) Congrats on a great find.
