So Illinois finally has a CCW law. It will be absolutely no fun jumping thru the hoops, but we have it, so I'll take it. I have a M&P 9mm full size, magazine disconnect, no manual safety. I also have a Taurus 1911 5" with no accessory rail. The M&P will be my main carry concern now as it is lighter and smaller. I need 2 things please.

1. A good comfortable IWB holster with no compromises on retention, and with 75+% concealability. The law states "mostly concealed" (kinda vague)

2. I need advice on carrying with one in the chamber or not. I am a bit worried about an accidental discharge and "plaxico-ing" myself, but also worried about drawing and not having one in the pipe and ending up dead with my hand on the slide. This is for the M&P, since it has no manual safety. The 1911 I will carry loaded with hammer back and safety on.

I have heard good things about the cross breed super tuck, and the galco king tuck, but they seem like a PITA to get on and off. Seeing that Illinois will be riddled with gun free zones:banghead:, I need something concealable, and convertible to get on and off sometimes frequently based on what businesses will post stuuuuuupid "guns prohibited" signs.

I also don't want to end up with the dreaded "holster drawer" full of misfit holsters that I bought and hated.

I don't really care if I "print" just that its safe and comfortable. I try to dress with some style so American eagle jeans that "fit" are preferred over 3 sizes too big carharts that will conceal a Desert Eagle .50.

Thanks!!

I'm not sure what you mean by this. There are almost always compromises on retention, slightly more, slightly less. Complete retention would most likely mean you couldn't draw the holster.

For the M&P and the other polymer pistols, kydex holsters always seem like the more natural match. Inexpensive, lightweight, weather resistant, durable. The snap loops on the holster body style are probably easier on/off than the wide spaced outboard loop styles like the Crossbreed. I would avoid the clip on models, in general (though there are some sturdy clips), as you may find the holster come off with the pistol during the draw. These kydex holsters are all similar to the classic leather IWB, the Milt Sparks Summer Special. All of the holsters I list should be available for both of your pistols.

A slightly different design, the Andrews Leather "MacDaniel II". It has a single snap loop, and if you need that extra retention you can get a thumb break. Not a common feature on an IWB holster. http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm

Alessi "PCH" is another style http://www.alessigunholsters.com/pch-1/

There is really no way around this. Even if you bought nothing but the finest holsters, you will always see another design and think, "gee, that must be more comfortable/better than what I'm using now". You can keep the number lower in your drawer, by avoiding the cheap stuff, but you'll be rolling the dice just about every holster you buy, since everybody is different. What one guy likes another guy hates.

Another option that may be helpful in your early holster search is a holster that can be worn either IWB or OWB. You may find you just can't stand IWB carry, and with these holsters you'll still have a perfectly good OWB holster.

Simply Rugged "Cuda". Get the inside/out straps and you can carry it IWB, OWB, and with the 3-slots, also cross draw. http://shop.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Cuda.cfm?item_id=155&parent=669

The most versatile holster I own is the Raven Concealment Phantom. http://www.ravenconcealment.com
With this holster, you can adjust the ride height and cant, just by moving the attachments, and you can also wear it IWB or OWB just by swapping out the attachments. It was one of the holsters I bought early in my holster journey, and it has been very helpful letting me figure out what ride height and cant works best for me.

Any IWB will be a pita to take on or off (especially if we're talking about removing the whole thing in a car.) alternative would be to simply draw the weapon and stash it ina secure location in the vehicle. Or use an OWB that snaps on.

I have found the crossbreed supertuck to be very comfortable for a glock 19 and easy to put on /take off when getting dressed. Only thing I don't like is the logo on the clips, would've preferred them to be plain, but I usually keep the whole thing covered anyway.

Since you have a minimum of six months before you're going to be packing, I suggest ordering a Milt Sparks Versa-Max2. None finer. I've had one for every one of my carry pistols, and currently have two of them, one for my Glock 26 and one for my 1911.

I have several holsters all similar to the Supertuck. They all work good but if you are wearing your shirt tucked in the most inconvenient thing is retucking your shirt or perhaps even needing to undo your pants to get the holster back down into your pants when you come back out of one of those dreadful "no firearms" places.

My employer is ok with me carrying but he wants me to lock my pistol up in my desk drawer while I'm inside the office. I've taken to leaving my holster in place and just unholstering the pistol. I unbutton a couple of buttons on my shirt and reach inside my shirt to unholster. This way I don't need to untuck or remove the holster. With an untucked shirt I just raise my shirt tail and unholster my pistol leaving the holster in place.

Most leather holster manufacturer's don't recommend wearing a leather IWB holster without a pistol in them but the hybrid bolsters are OK without a pistol in them.

Heavy duty Kydex clips are stiffer and stronger than regular Kydex clips. With Kydex clips you can drill extra holes in the clips to fine-tune the adjustment or even cut the bottom of the clip off to shorten the clip if you've got some excess clip hanging down. Metal clips can't be easily modified.

JTQ gave you some good choices.

I carry my M&P 9c in a Comp-Tac Infidel and my S&W 3913 in a BladeTech IWB with belt loops. The Comp-Tac with belt clip is easy to remove. I do have to do that every day when I go into banks or federal buildings.

When I used to carry revolvers I carried my S&W 686 in a Sparks Summer Special. It was pretty comfortable but I don't miss the weight. I prefer to carry a heavier pistol OWB with a quality belt.

You should consider "printing" since most state laws say that concealed means concealed. You don't want someone to call the police and lose your CC privileges.

Yep, they are. But practice helps and I don't think there's a design out there that is any more comfortable for iwb carry.

I need advice on carrying with one in the chamber or not.

Imo, one in the chamber is the only practical mode of carry if getting a shot off as quickly and as safely as possible to save your life is the reason you're carrying a pistol in the first place. Basic safe firearm handling protocol (keeping your finger off the trigger until the moment of discharge being one of them) will absolutely prevent a negligent discharge.

I also don't want to end up with the dreaded "holster drawer" full of misfit holsters that I bought and hated.

Though a little thought, research and planning will go a long way in minimizing the amount of leather in the "holster drawer", as JTQ noted, if you do this long enough, "there is really no way around this." :(

Buy once cry once, the Milt Sparks SS is one of my favorites. Another great design is the Alessi Talon Plus.

Get a White Hat Holsters Max Tuck. It is like the Crossbreed Supertuck, but you can customize it. You can also buy an extra piece of kydex for a different gun model and then you pretty much have two holsters in one. All you have to do in order to change which gun the holster is set up for is know how to use a screwdriver.

Here is mine with my Glock 19:

I've taken to making my own holsters out of kydex. You can form it to be as tight or loose as you need. You can also make your own belt loop. I make them so that they're easy to take on and off but are safe from a bad guy ripping it off. If I get time tomorrow I'll post a pic.

As long as you have good retention and coverage of the trigger guard, there shouldn't be an issue in carrying a round in the chamber.

New problem......too many good options. I better clean out a drawer.... ;) thanks for all the help! And I will be carrying OIC now. With a good holster and careful shirt tucking this shouldn't be a problem.

VersaCarry - Best IWB Holster yet

I am a career Law Enforcement Officer. I have carried a firearm everyday for the last 29+ years. My preferred carry has always been IWB and until recently by method was the GLOCK Klip by Jentra. While very convenient and comfortable, you have to remove the clip to field strip and the firearm will not fit anything but a sloppy nylon holster with the clip installed. I discovered VersaCarry in March 2013 and bought two. One to fit my Kahr PM9 and one to fit my G26. I have been VERY pleased. The one for my G26 broke last week but I called them and they shipped me another. I've worn one or the other every day since I got them. One note, for a left hander, the VersaCarry doesn't work real well on a Kahr, mostly because of the slide stop lever. See more information at http://www.versacarry.com. My choice for an IWB concealed carry holster was Versacarry.

Don Hume Leathergoods IWB Item# H715-MT.B for an M&P9c is the one I found to be most comfortable, concealable and secure yet easy to remove if needed. You can look at their website for pictures and more details. If you do order it there may be a long wait but when it arrived I knew right away it was well worth it.

The Raven Phantom is an extremely well made option for OWB and IWB carry

I have two, one for my G19 and one for my G26. I carry one or the other every day. I prefer the OWB holster more as its a very fast presentation from the holster.

Here is the IWB Kydex holster that my son made for me and is the most comfortable, secure, holster I've ever owned. :) It fits both my Glock 26 and my Kahr CW9 with CT laser. The loops are made in such a way it won't work out and fall on the cement as I experienced with the cheap clip type of holsters. Kydex also retains the gun and allows for easy re holstering. we designed the leather big enough to protect my skin from being gouged by the gun and pliable to form to my hip. We thought we might trim some excess leather but found it to be just the right amount.
Thanks,
Rod
