In addition to the beautiful days outside there's this:

Bacon wrapped ruffed grouse breast, mashed acorn squash seasoned with pumpkin pie spice and a grouse/Swiss chard/portobello mushroom soup. Most of it we shot or grew ourselves.

Tip: marinade the grouse overnight in hard apple cider before cooking.

You're eating pretty well. That's one of the nice things about hunting: venison, pheasant, and grouse are all typically very expensive items served at gourmet restaurants that are pretty common table fare among most hunters. Even though I'm probably paying pretty close to gourmet prices when all is said and done for my venison, at least I'm getting the experience and satisfaction of doing it myself.

Ahh yes someone else who understands why I hunt to EAT it not that I have to but i do it for the enjoyment.

I'm looking into getting started(been shooting a long time).

They sure don't make it easy for the under 35 crowd. Find a mentor and take a 8 hour class before you can get a license.

If you're 36 you just go into a walmart buy ammo, rifle, hunting license and have at it.

Thats a heavy serving for one. Lose the bacon or cut the serving size to half.
Just kidding.

Enjoy

No antibiotics..no steroids....I don't care what anyone says...me and my family. We eat wild when we can!

Funny enough...the wife fried some store bought pork the other day. My son said. "Hey this taste like deer."

Yep, that looks delicious. We had some fresh whitetail backstraps Saturday night that had only been dead for a few hours. Don't get any more organic than that. I like watching deer, and I'd love to kill a big buck, but the eatin is what this fat boy likes the most. :)

This is an awful thread! :D It's cruel and unusual punishment! Dang, that looks delicious.

My wife grew up under a military dictatorship in Chile, and as such as horridly afraid of firearms...right up to the point she tasted pheasant. She now even likes boar, ram and venison. She actually went with me to buy my new Browning Citori, and asks me to go hunt. :D

Kudos on the great meal. Keep enjoying the hunt and the payoff.

My wife is a nutritionist, and our family eats primarily deer, then next is beef and hog raised by our friends. Store bought meat is rarely seen in our house. My kids will hardly eat a burger at a restaurant, as they say it doesn't taste right.

I would like to add venison to the menu soon. Unfortunately, I don't particularly enjoy deer hunting nor am I very good at it.

I still go every year in hopes that I get a deer. I would just prefer my season to end in success just after the start of legal shooting hours on opening day so as to not prolong the misery.

I hear you. My daughter was raised on home-cooked, from scratch meals cooked by me when I was a stay-at-home dad, and she loves wild game. She loathes "fast" foods. :D Seriously, we are very fortunate folks who hunt.

To the OP, this is a great thread! Thanks so much for starting it.

My kids always think they want to try fast food...then on the rare occasion they get it, they don't like it. I think more families would do well to grow and kill their own food. We are indeed lucky.

I calculated that we have consumed close to 3,000 lbs of venison in the last 35 years.
