I am a 1911 guy, but I decided I want to have a .45 other than a 1911. I have a S&W 625JM revolver but am looking for a semi-auto gun. Springfields and Glocks are too large for my hands. I looked at a CZ and it was also too big. I've tried to find some reasonably priced 3rd generation S&W 4506 or 4566 with no luck. Any suggestions on any other pistols that do not have a thick or blocky grip would be welcomed.

And no, I'm not moving away from 1911s. They are still my favorite gun and I own two. I just want to try something different.

You owe it to yourself to try an HK45C. They are slim enough for my smallish hands. They are soft shooting, accurate, reliable, and easy to maintain. They hold either 8 in standard mag. or 10 in the extended mag. They are a good size for concealed carry.

I have read they are nice, but I haven't had a chance to put my paws on one yet. I'm going to Whittakers in a couple of weeks and maybe they will have one.

Springfield xds or Glock 36, the 36 is not like the other glocks. It's much thinner. I didn't like the other glocks either till I tried a 36.The xds is coming out of a recall, but it is a one you should try also.

The SR 45 is slimmer, as are the polymer CZ clones. While not as slim as those two I just tried a SAR K2 and it seemed to have a better grip than my Witness .45, and it has 14 rounds!

I found the XDS to be unbearable to shoot without the extended grip, and it gave me blisters even with it, but it is very concealable.

I've owned and sold two Sig p220s. They are a little large for me to grip and handle the controls. They are nice guns though, thats why I have tried two. I also fired the XDS 45. While it is easily small enough to hold, I can't imagine shooting 200 rounds in a session with it. A few shots are okay, but repeatedly being able to get back on target for quick follow-ups is more punishment than I want. I know the small light guns have their role for carry, but I am more interested in shooting. If I'm going to carry it is either a 9mm on my ankle or a 1911 tucked in my waist band. All of my guns are shooters meaning that I put a few hundred rounds down range everytime I take them out. I'm sure many people can handle the little 45 cannons just fine but I don't find them enjoyable to shoot. I'm looking more for a full size gun. I have a 454 revolver that has less felt recoil than some of the pocket 45s.

The S&W M&P45 has a lot less felt recoil than either the XD or the Glock. With it's interchangeable backstraps, it might fit your hand

HK USP .45, HK45 and the Sig P220 have all been good for me.
The HK's have the edge in reliability for me, but the Sig is a sweet handling pistol, it just doesn't feed SWC's as reliably.

Not sure if there are any .45s with a grip thinner than a 1911. Even the SF Glocks will have a bulkier grip. Have you tried a SIG 220 with a shortened trigger reach?

I suggest the Sig P220. I own a number of them and all are excellent shooters. I also recently purchased a Sig P227, with about 200 rounds thru it, flawless.

Obviously, pick what fits you best but give the Sigs a try.

I'd for sure check out both the M&P 45 series and the Sig P220.

And don't throw the 21 out the window just yet, get hold of a Gen4 21 and see if that's any better, without the backstraps the grip is noticeably smaller than regular gen3 versions and the grip texture is very nice. I've owned a P220, several M&P 45's and while they're nice in their own right, the Gen4 21 is the nicest shooting .45 I've ever shot.

Multiple votes for a 220 yet OP stated he had them and didnt like them.... :banghead:

M&P45 and HK45 both have horrendous triggers, but have some of the best ergonomics.

If you have small hands (as do I), and the SIG P220 is just a bit too big for a comfortable grip, maybe try the P220 Compact model.

SIG P220 series or XDM series. I love my SIGs and they have served me well, but I really like my Springfield XDM 4.5. Its too heavy for me for wearing on a belt all day,but has made a great HD pistol.
