I'm looking at the 20 gauge for deer. I've always hunted deer with a rifle, but we sold our hunting land up north, so now the only place I have to hunt is shotgun-only. Single shot doesn't really bother me since I've never shot at a deer more than once. Yes, I've missed before, but the deer was long gone before I could get a second shot. Plus, I've had a single shot H&R smoothbore for about 25 years, and I can stuff the shells in pretty quick if need be.

Anyway, my main question is about accuracy. I'm assuming the heavier barrel is more accurate, but how much more? I've spent a couple hours searching the web, and folks seem to prefer one or the other for different reasons, but I couldn't find anything about a definitive difference in accuracy. If the heavier gun is noticeably more accurate I will go with it. If there isn't much difference, the lighter gun seems to make more sense. I will be hunting mostly from a stand with a rest, so the weight isn't really a big deal to me. The difference in recoil isn't a big deal either. The price is exactly the same.

Does anybody have an idea how much more accurate one could expect the heavier version to be?

Thanks in advance!

I would also look at the savage 220F 20 ga.I own one and they are tack drivers.

I fired a group of 5 slugs from a 12 ga utlta slug hunter that all five slugs were touching @ 150 yards . I have a tracker II that will shoot better than I can with iron sights . I can head shoot small game 40 yards plus with the iron sights on it

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go with the heavier deluxe model. http://www.cabelas.com/product/H-R-Ultra-Slug-Hunter-Deluxe-Shotguns/707270.uts It has a nice laminated stock, and the price is right. I handled one today, and it feels great. I actually like the weight of it. I'm still bummed out about not hunting with my rifle, but I'm also kind of excited to hunt with one of these new fancy slug guns. :D

I've heard great things about the savage bolt gun, but I can get the Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe plus a decent scope for the price of one. I prefer wood over plastic as well.
