MAIG has an agenda of spreading false facts by promoting their misinformed followers to get active during their Thanksgiving Day dinners. It'll certainly create plenty of friction at Thanksgiving Day feasts across the US. MAIG is attempting to send agents of ignorance to spread the worst of lies while doing it too. Using the “Myth:/Fact:” method to present their argument, they’ve got it backwards. I am looking at it as an opportunity as sending a someone who is misinformed, they will not have any substance other than parroting the talking points set out by MAIG. I hope it backfires as many anti-gun folks are rather proud that they know nothing whatsoever about firearms.

That guy has no shame.

I read an article about Bloomberg in either "Time" or "Newsweek" magazine (can't remember which one), and it was downright frightening. This is a guy determined to enforce his will on millions of people and he doesn't give a damn if we like it or not. He has the money and influence to make it happen too.

There is a solution. Don't go to big family gatherings except for weddings and funerals. You can avoid potential soapbox situations like that by simply not playing in the same sandbox. No one should be afraid to shut down Uncle Billy when he wants to get all Bloombergian during dessert.

Blood family are really important to some people, but too many times we overlook the fact that we are often better off socializing with the family of true friends that have grown around us.

How funny the one supposed fact is false. 40% of sales Are essentially FTF with no background check. I guess that since that sentence is so close to another that contains the word criminal, we are suppose to assume that the 40% described are all criminals. And I'm getting a little tired of the B.S. about no checks at gun shows, and the B.S. about internet sales. Maybe it's different in other states, but in mine if u buy from a dealer at a gun show, you have to fill out a 4473. FTF sales at guns shows are no different at gun shows than anywhere else. If you buy online it will only ship to an ffl at which point you must fill out a 4473 to take possession.

I can only gain hope in the idea that there is a special place in hell for people who live on lies and deceit on such a massive and manipulative scale.

Sorry for preaching to the chior.

Great! Promote a contentious argument at Holidays when the rules are "No discussions of politics, religion, or (insert contentious family topic)."

I love the lie of equating the lack of universal background checks to crimes committed with firearms. That one's actually easy to counter since you can point to states with liberal background check laws that have much lower crime rates than those with very restrictive laws. How is it that a state with no restrictions has a lower crime rate than those with universal background checks and even more restrictive permit to buy/own requirements if background checks have any meaning in crime rates?

I had to laugh for a good 10 minutes when I first saw that article the other day. He is telling his little minions to start arguments over the "misinformation about guns" when it is Mayor Bloomberg himself, who does not know the facts.

I'd welcome the opportunity to debate the misinformation someone may spout at a gathering. They are going to a duel with an unloaded gun, so-to-speak.

Look on the bright side; the type of person who'd advocate for MAIG at family gatherings will probably be the type to ruin them anyway :D

That stat is entirely irrelevant, anyway.

It came from an early 1990s poll of 250 people and covered sales/transfers that occurred BEFORE the Brady Bill mandated background checks of all FFL sales.

It is about the most baseless statistic that the gun control crowd uses; even worse than the "90% want universal background checks" statistic!

If I didn't open this thread I'd never have heard of this. I reckon most folks are about the same. Let "Mayor Midget Tool" spend a couple million$ on ads. mainstream networks could use the cash flow. Joe

MAIG Talking Turkey About Guns

?

I had one of those 12ga 3.5" turkey guns, jug choked, vented. (Loaned money to a relative who eventually said keep it, I'm too strapped.) The stock was too long, and a turkey specific gun was just too specialized for me to keep, so I traded it toward a .30-30/12ga over/under.

Talking Turkey about Guns for Thanksgiving! Yea! Hey, let's get around the Thanksgiving dinner table and discuss politics and religion and cousin Leroy's love life while we are at it.

Bloomberg. Whatta turkey!

And one of the talking points is the familiar 40% stat. From the 1994 NSPOF survey with 251 persons who acquired guns in 1991-1993.
60% from licensed delears. (The survey was first published in 1997.)
"40% of guns estimated to have been transferred without a background check"
19% were gifts between family members and friends*
13% were used guns sold by private owners
5% were inheritances
3% were swaps and trades of used guns among private owners

*I know when I gave my wife a revolver and shotgun for gifts, they were bought by me with a BG check (and she would have passed a BG check if I gave her the money and she had bought them herself); and when my son bought matching rifles with BG check and gave one to me for a gift, I have been BG checked multiple times and have a carry permit, meaning I have passed state and federal BG checks with fingerprint cards and have done nothing to lose the permit.

I would outright dare anyone with little or no prior "education" on gun culture to try to arm themselves with those "arguments, then debate me with them. It would be so pitiful I might even cry for them.

Not only that, but MAIG isn't even trying to claim through convoluted and massaged stats that the 68 GCA and it's 4473s had any effect on the homicide rate or violent crime. They're claiming that "background checks work because the system has resulted in over 2,000,000 denials since 1998". Ok ... and that's a good thing why? If it didn't lower the homicide rate then what's the point? We're right back at that Archie Bunker cliche "would it make you feel better if they'd been pushed out of windows?".

I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone that brought up that crap that "Dinner's over for you, you need to leave" and pick up their plate.

Anyone stupid enough to start an anti gun tirade at my family gatherings wouldn't be welcome for long. My retired mother has become about as pro-gun as it gets. She would likely give them 1 chance to shut up then show them the door.

Good luck at my house...

This year will be the 5th annual "Turkey Shoot" for my family. We had some nice weather up here 4 years ago and we began going out before dinner to shoot the new acquisitions in a group setting. There's gonna be a Ruger 1911, a 17HMR, and a couple old favorites. We take turns, are very safety conscious, and have the opportunity to spend time together.
It started with my wife and I, a brother in law and a sister going out back, and other family members watching from indoors. My Dad now goes out, my nephew is joining us, and I may even get mom outside to dump a mag this year. I try to add one family member every year, even if only to "try it".
We've got tannerite this year!

Blombergians need need not apply!

MAIG and UBC counterpoint:

UBC would apply to NSPOF average citizen survey fractions of:
13% purchase from non-dealer (private sales, used guns)
19% gift from family or friend
3% trade or swap used guns
5% inheritance
(NSPOF's 40%)

UBC would apply to BJS state inmate survey fractions of:
20.8% Drug dealer/street
18.5% Rent or borrow from inmate family or friend
12.8% Purchase or trade from inmate family or friend
9.9% Theft or burglary
8.4% Fence/black market
8.3% Other from inmate family or friend
(BJS 78%)

Question: would these sources comply with a UBC? Voluntarily go to a gun dealer and pay to have the gun dealer run a background check on the buyer?

I seriously doubt this will be an issue where I'm dining Thursday. After dinner most male adults some female adults and the majority of the kids are shooed out of the house so the bosses can put away leftovers and clean up a bit. We usually end up at the 22 range shooting pumpkin pie filling and cranberry sauce cans or at the clay tosser. This year I'm bringing 2 Pecan pies, 2 dozen deviled eggs and my Ruger MKII.
