Good evening folks,

You helped a lot when I asked about the barrel lenght I should choose for my TC Encore, thank you. It will be 26". As previously mentionned, it will also be stainless steel to match the other parts of the gun I already own as a muzzleloader.

Which scope would you put on it within the following guidelines:

1. Max cost is $500.
2. Will primarily shoot at the range at 100 and 200 meters.
3. Will definitely want to come along hunting deer with me sometime.
4. Absolutely NO illuminated reticle.
5. Must match the rifle. So, silver models only, nothing black on this rifle.

You are encouraged to write about what you have used as well as about what you fancy!

I am a fan of Leopold, from what I know get a VXll or better. Last I knew they are available in silver. Natchez had some good deals on Nitrex scopes but I don't know if there were any silver ones. I run a VXll on my stainless 700. I am sure there are other choices too.

The roman numeral VX-I, II, and III scopes were replaced several years ago with much improved VX-1, 2, and 3 models.

You can spend as much as you want, but a current VX-2 is as much scope as you'll ever need. A standard 3-9X40 will run about $300 and are offered in silver finish.

The VX-3's are somewhat better, but are priced closer to $500. Better, but not $200 better.

Do what you want, but I'd not have a silver finished scope on a stainless or any other rifle. Every scope, rifle and mount manufacturer uses a different color of silver. You will never match them. You'll likely end up with 3 different shades of silver. Black scopes and mounts are much easier to match and look much better to boot. If you have ever tried to sell a used silver scope you'll find that you almost have to give them away.

It seems jmr40 can almost always express just about what I was thinking, better and quicker, but he's right about trying to match a silver scope, mounts, and rifle. It usually ends up looking like someone trying to make a suit out of a blue blazer and unrelated blue slacks; looks just bad enough everyone will notice.

I have a Leupold 3.5x10x40 VX-III - matt silver, $579 new, I'm asking $350 in excellent condition. It's about 5 yrs. old.

Other than that, Vortex makes some pretty good glass. I just bought two of their 6x18 scopes, not bad glass really for the money. I think they were $250 each, maybe a little less? And Vortex has a no BS or questions asked warranty, similar to Leupold.

But you absolutely can't go wrong with Leupold. I have been using Leupold for a very long time and have yet to encounter a problem, other than two pairs of glasses that started leaking after more than 30 years of hard field use. I sent both pairs to Leupold, and they sent them back completely refurbished, and at no charge for repair or shipping.

Magnification

Thanks guys, Leupold scopes seem good. And they don't have the horrible (new?) Nikon BDC reticles. I will also look up Nitrex and Vortex now. I had never heard of them. I looked at Swarowski, but they are a bit expensive to my taste.

jmr40, thanks for the info and Fremmer, thanks for the matte black alternative idea. Had not given any thought on the matte... It might also look good.

gamestalker, I thank you for your offer. It would be interesting if we lived in the same country. Would you by any chance live in Canada? If not, I am afraid custom and international shipping fees would make the deal a little less sweet.

I think I would like the 3.5x10x40 setup. I currently own only one scope and it is a Bausch & Lomb Elite 3200 in 1.5x6x?? (can't remember, probably 32). I think I would enjoy shooting at 200 meters a bit more with a 10x magnification.

For the occasional hunting purposes, I would not usually go towards anything higher than 2x minimal magnification factor, but since that rifle would only accompany me for field hunting, 3.5 seems very reasonable.

Any particular thoughts on the best magnification factors to look for given my desired use?

This isn't the answer you want to hear.

I have a Weaver fixed 6X scope on my Ruger M-77 270. At 100 yds it will shoot 1/2" 3 shot groups.

This isn't the answer to want to hear.

Unlike a variable power scope I don't have to worry about changing the zoom setting when a deer jumps up close.

This isn't the answer you want to hear.

My Weaver fixed power is much less expensive than a variable.

Like I said this isn't the answer you want to hear.

I own a Leupold VX-2 3-9X, a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X, a couple of Leupold 4.5-14's (VX-III and VX-3) and a couple of Burris Fullfield 2 3-9X and Redfield Revolution 4-12X scopes. They all work well and I am happy with all of them. I am just as happy with my latest scope purchase,a Nitrex 3-9X gloss scope from Natchezss.com. $99.99 plus shipping. The gloss ones are sold out but they still have the silver version for $99.99 as well as the matte black finish for $119.95 plus shipping. The best scope bargain I have ever picked up.

My .270 Win is a Ruger 77RSI (18.5" bbl, full stock) and is a delightful stalking rifle. I mounted a Leupy VX-3 in 2.5-8x36 as a suitable optic...it is really a pleasant rifle to tote for long hunts...light, compact and enough optics for 300+ yards shots. When slung, the barrel doesn't exceed my height (6'1") so I can comfortably traverse woods and still take shots as long as I'll ever need. Oh, and with my hand loads using 130gr and 140gr bullets, I get sub-MOA accuracy.

I recommend the choice of all components to a hunting package be considered a system with a particular use defined in advance. Thus, for open country deer/pronghorn, my Win M70 in 7mm RM with 3.5-10x44 Zeiss RapidZ800 gets the nod while for mixed terrain deer, the Ruger .270 gets used. Backing up a nephew for elk, I'll take my .375 H&H with 3-9x40. I keep all my shots to < 400 yards to keep all my shots ethical and likely to be successful and <300 for deer/pronghorn with vital areas <9" in diameter. YMMV.
