Been watching it all night!

Merry Christmas all and don't shoot your eyes out! :D

3 rd time since its been running

I have the DVD,but just prefer to run it on the boob tube looped for 24 hours .

I am of the FIRM belief that the 'shoot your eye out' line is overplayed as is the actual showing of him hitting himself.

I tried that exact gag with the Red Ryder [ mine is a 1947 model ] and I cant get one to come back at me .let alone my face as that means it would come off the backstop [ target ] with the same force it left the barrel = NOT POSSIBLE.

Did get a few to hit near my feet.

When I was a kid, I took a pot shot with a Daisy at my kid brother (we lived in the country, circa 1950's). I hit him BETWEEN the eyes. Needless to say, we didn't do that stuff again. I have also had stuff bounce back at me, so I'm a believer. I've never told a soul about that incident before.

scaatylobo,

With enough rounds downrange, yes indeed you can get a BB to come back at you. When I was teaching my son (then in single-digit age) to shoot with a BB gun in the basement, firing into a cardboard box full of crumpled newspapers, we had one come back and land on the table next to us, spinning like a top. It was totally cinematic. I have no idea what it ricocheted off of, since, unlike Ralphie, we were not using a metal sign as a backstop.

He immediately and forever quit complaining about my insisting on eye protection. (He's now 18 and shoots real stuff with me all the time.)

if you read all my postings, you would see that I did have a round [ BB ] come back.

The point I was trying to make is that the movie showed a violation of the law of physics.

The BB would need the same energy it left the barrel with to come back at eye level, that is not logical.

BUT if it did bounce high off the backstop = it would FALL and not shoot back at shooter.

And we all know the actual velocity of the R.R. is a "bit" low to start.

I believe in wearing eye's AND ears when shooting, especially eye's when shooting air guns [ soft air AND paint ball ]

Jean Shepherd (who wrote and narrated the film) is my favorite author/humorist.

Also survived my own version of the "pink nightmare" Christmas growing up...

A Must See Every Year

I love the Ovaltine decoder bathroom scene. I just can't get it out of my head!

Must have seen the movie 15 or more times, and still laugh. A classic.

I wouldn't miss it.
I also have the DVD but always watch it on TV.

I am always disappointed that Ralphie is a drama queen when he breaks his glasses. Instead of just admitting that his glasses fell off, he couldn't see and as a result he stepped on them he blames it on the BB gun. Then he leaves his gun outside :what: Why ????

Jean Shepherd is fantastic. I was tuning around shortwave a week or two ago and a station in Maine was playing one of his shows and it was the show where he told the story about his friend Flick sticking his tongue to the pole.
