There is more to it than where a barrel will screw in and headspace. Lots of areas to check/gage before starting assembly. Example -The frame bridge is critical. It should not be cracked, broken, or worn to the point that it does not keep the firing pin retracted until the bolt is locked.
Get a Kuhnhausen manual or possibly one of Scott Duff's books (The M1 Garand Complete Assembly Guide - How to build your own M1 Garand by Walt Kuleck with Clint McKee) to see what areas to inspect/gage and where those gotchas may be hiding.
