I recently received my 01 FFL and am starting a small business (soon to be online, via Web store, Gun Broker (already) and Transfer Business in my home office. I am asking about what accounting system (ie QuickBooks Online, Pro, etc ?) others have used and are happy with. Prefer a low overall cost.

If you are only doing a few sales a year, just do it on paper or excel. For anything more serious, use QB online and be done with it. It works, integrates with other systems and all accountants will use it and probably charge you less for using it. The less work they have to do the better.

Accounting professionals feel free to correct me.

If you won't have any large capital projects (land, buildings, expensive equipment), or complicated accounting issues then Quickbooks is fine. Do yourself and your accountant a favor and ask for their input on setting up your accounts. Feel free to PM me.

Don't do any sort of paper work. IF & when they ever come to check your books just tell they you where using the Louise Lerner file system and now it seems there's nothing there to see. It just crashed.

As a CPA I would advise QuickBooks. Online should work fine but the desktop versions are more robust. You could purchase the entry level desktop version and should be fine.

If you want to discuss more PM me your phone number and I can tell you the pros and cons of desktop versus online. Online in the past was not so great but has come a long way.

Peachtree is not nearly as common in the accounting community. As someone else mentioned you may be able to use Excel but if you're planning to use a CPA for taxes and review of your books - do them (and yourself) a favor and use QuickBooks.
