As promised, I am posting a photo of my oldest son's birthday present -- a Henry 45-70 with Leupold Ultimate Slam 3-9x. The original plan was to go with the Marlin GBL, but the recent quality control problems with cracked receivers, etc., scared me off of Marlin for now. I've never fired a Henry until now, but I'll have to say that the build quality is excellent and the gun feels very compact and solid. The loading tube is a little different, but it took no time at all to get the hang of it.

The ghost ring sights were spot-on right out of the box, but I'll need to zero the Leupold this coming week. With the exception of a case and leather padded sling, the gift is complete. (I did add the hammer extension)

MANY THANKS to all of you for your help with the scope selection and other input on the lever action gift idea! You guys saved me a lot of time and effort, and I really appreciate everything you've done! :)

I'd sure be mighty grateful and proud to receive such a fine birthday present! I am sure that it will be a great birthday all around!

Excellent, you're a great dad...a gift he can have for a lifetime. I'd love to see the Big Boy line have that finish.

As the proud owner (or maybe not so proud) of a Remlin GBL I can pretty much say it is a wash between the two. Pretty much because I have not handled the Henry. I would have purchased either but the GBL came available used first. After 60 405 gr Remingtons and 20 405 gr Hammerheads, I like it a lot.

That is a very nice setup you got your boy. Shoot the heck out of it with him. These lever guns are like a virus I tell you.

Memorable birthday for all, I'm sure. I own a Henry in .45 Colt and the quality is A-1. I am certain your son will enjoy his rifle for many years to come, and I'm sure there will be a lot of memories for you both.

Thanks, guys, for the kind words. This is a helluva good community and I'm very grateful to be part of it! :) Now, my youngest son (still in high school) wants one of his own, but he'll have to wait for a bit. I'm looking forward to having several hunts with my sons with the new hardware!

way to go, gifts like that will last a lifetime... I really like the old 45/70, you can cast your own and shoot just for the price of the primer and powder.

and shooting with your kids is about the best memories you'll have.

have fun and shoot safely

Here is a photo of the final kit -- sling, butt cuff, and scope mounted. My son's birthday was yesterday, so he didn't see the final gift until then. He was VERY excited and will be looking forward to putting it through its paces when he gets home from college this summer. :)
