Can I get some recommendations on where to start for a match rifle?

I have always been a SR shooter, and while I do still enjoy the challenges of the SR I'm in the mood for something different as of late. I've decided I'd like to build a match rifle, even if only to have something different to pull out of the safe for those weekends when I'm just not feeling like shooting SR. I'm not enroute to HM or legging out, so this is really just a fun project to put another accurate rifle into my safe, rather than to take home a presidents 100 tab or the like.

With that said here's kind of my list for my MR wants:

Bolt action
Stripper clip feed (well really anything other than a detachable magazine feed)
Traditional style stock (nothing against the T2K or the like, their looks just don't do it for me)

So within those boundaries I know I have a pretty large selection of components and such to work with. However having no real experience with MR, I'm not sure what direction to go with. I know that the list sketched out above is certainly not the best easiest/fastest/best setup, I'm aware that at detachable magazine for instance is the way to go with the way strippers are treated under the rules currently. As I noted above though, I'm looking for something different and enjoyable (and if that happens to be Krag style side feed, then so be it!), rather than uber competitive.

I reload so caliber is not a huge deal so long as components are reasonably available. I'm thinking either .223 (because I have a ton of it already like most of us), or one of the 6mm cartridges just for the ballistics.

As far as a donor action, are there any recomendations for one being better then the other? I ran a Rem 700 years ago for a tactical rifle, and I currently own a Howa. I've handled a savage, but never shot one; and I haven't ever worked a Win model 70. I know Savage has the advantage of easy barrel swaps, and the actions aren't particularly expensive. Then again a Remington you can almost get parts for at 7-11 these days. I personally like my Howa, but they don't sell a stripped action as far as I know, and the barrels are hydraulically torqued apparently and most folks recommend just sending the action to the factory to have them rebarrel. Obviously I'd prefer to not have to do that, and the max length is a 24" barrel to my knowledge. I've considered using a donor Mauser or Springfield action taken from a sporter or something similar, but I have no knowledge of how easy/impossible it would be to work with various milsurp guns to make them into a serviceable match rifle.

As far as the feed system goes, that's really just because I find the challenge of running a gun with strippers or enblocs to be a fun challenge. What are the various choices I have to make that happen, and are their certain actions, that just won't work with that?

Lastly the stock, again I know that the uber adjustable stocks have a lot of advantages, but they just don't do it for me. I'm fairly familiar with most of the various options out there for tactical style shooting, but if there are any hidden gems out there I'm all ears.

I know I haven't even gotten to sights, handstops, etc, but I figure I'll worry about those once I get a plan for the rifle figured out.

Thanks!

Old Winchester Mod 70 actions are very slick with Rem 700 a close second. CG-Extreme makes very nice 2 stage triggers for both.

A much easier way to get to a wood stock MR would be a Tikka T3 Sporter or an old Tikka 595.

Either way, get a Right Sight for the front and a Phoenix Rear Sight and you're good to go.

I'm not terribly familiar with Tikka's, but I know they have a good reputation. I'll do some looking.

Sounds like something you could find being sold off by some old codger too creaky to shoot... or his heirs.
You might have to buy a new barrel fairly soon, but you might could accumulate the whole outfit all at once, too.

I've got a classic match rifle in .308 Win.;

*Win 70 pre-'64 trued action,

*Hart .290" x .3077" 1:11 twist 26" barrel,

*Wright wood stock with vertical adjustable butt plate and fore end rail with hand stop. Devcon epoxy bedded with reinforcing cross bolts in front of and behind magazine port.

*Redfield Int'l rear (adjustable Gehman iris) and Tompkins aperture front (with set of inserts for front) metallic sights.

Davis clip guide part of rear sight base. Several 5-round clips.

About 2,000 rounds through the barrel. After another 1000, it can be set back 2" and you've got a virtually new 24" one.

This one tested 1/2 MOA at 600 yards when new, now about 2/3 MOA at 600. Also have 1X fired WCC58 (best ever), new and 1X fired WCC60 (second best) and Federal match brass.

PM me if you're interested.

This is my example of a match rifle: Remington 40X 7.62NATO. Modifications made extended bolt handle, 3-way butt plate, barrel diameter at muzzle machined to accept RPA front ladder sight and OEM trigger guard floor plated replaced with a drop box floor plate for easer insertion of (5) rounds. Rear sight RPA
