I just acquired a Bob Tingle BP single shot, and I know they were made in .40 and .44 cal. This one will take an unpatched .429 ball with only a little effort, so would that make it a .40 cal? There's nothing on the barrel marking it's caliber. Also, does anyone know if the breech end of the barrel unscrews from the rest? I can see it's a separate piece of steel, but don't want to bugger it up trying to force it. Any info is appreciated.

I don't know how many variations there may be, but my Tingle 40 cal has a allen screw under the frame in font of the trigger guard that secures the barrel. The barrel is not threaded in, it will pull straight out. I've marked a RED arrow on your image to indicate the location of my screw. Do you have an allen screw here?

Old Bob made this gun, a half-stock rifle and a side slapper shotgun. All were a little ahead of their time with coil spring locks. I won piles of stuff with my Tingle 45 rifle. Had one of the pistols but someone had let it rust too much. Lapped it out but they were very shallow rifling and it just didn't work.
Saw one of the o/u shotguns just a few months ago.
Tried to get him to make me one of his shotguns with choked barrels but he didn't "believe" we needed choke. Even made a huge single shot that he loaded with a broom to show that he could break birds with no choke Truly a character.

Tingle pistol

Yes, mine has a screw there, I was asking about the breech end of the barrel itself, as it is a separate piece of steel where the nipple goes in, and I was wondering if it unscrewed from the rest of the barrel. I had the barrel miked at a machine shop, and it measured .428, so I guess that makes it a .40 cal? I'm going to get some .410 balls from Track of the Wolf and try them with a lubed .018 ticking patch.

I've always thought it looked like my Tingle barrel was one piece, and that there wasn't actually a breach plug.

I know I've seen different configurations and styles in various photos.
