I currently own three different .45 pistols. An older SIG P220, a Springfield XD45, and an RIA "Tactical" 1911. All three have been reliable and accurate. Personally, I shoot the XD the best. By that measure, for me the XD is "best." I'm keeping the others though.
I have a Marlin 1894C in .357 which is quite accurate with the factory sights and has never jammed once with any .38spl or .357 I've fed it. I've generally heard nothing but good things about the Puma as well and wouldn't have any qualms about buying one.
For fun shooting I'd recommend an AK variant of your choice. If you really want to make it a varmint gun your best choice would likely be the CZ 527 in 7.62x39.

Is <basic pistol type example #1> better than / an improvement on <same basic pistol type, example #2>?
Is a SIG P226 an improved Beretta 92? Is a Browning Hi Power an improved 1911?
Which is better? Whichever one works better for you. Which may not be...
I bought a stripped AR lower marked Century back in 2003 and built a perfectly good AR on it. I've had no trouble with it. I can't speak for the AR's they've built.
I'm not a hunter, but this argument doesn't pass muster. You say you don't like killing animals that "are as smart as your pet cat or dog." If that's the case then buying the meat at the market is just as bad.
I have a an older MKII series 22/45. Honestly? Don't bother disassembling it if you don't have to. I use a boresnake, a toothbrush and occasionally I use some patches pushed around like swabs on the end of a toothpick to clean mine. Still shooting with no problems.
