My sacred lair is pretty much in Amish country. Out in the sticks, we have home burglary as the biggest fear. When it takes 2-3 hours to go to the grocery store, the bad-guys have run of the roost while you're gone. I haven't heard about any violent stuff, but a few years ago, we had a home...

Use an 8"x60" PVC pipe. Cap one end. Line the pipe with a heavy plastic bag. Fill pipe to the brim with mineral oil or other metal preserving oil. Put in metal gun parts. Cap pipe and seal.
The metal gun parts are now totally protected from air & h2o.

Kevlar is the best option if you're worried about weight. Titanium & Kevlar is better, but stone is great too.
But if the steel is free, get it. Get lots of it. Metal is not cheap today. Sell it as scrap if the building folks say no. Or cut it up into pieces for target practice.
+1
For the M1A. Just because you will enjoy it.
If you want to put some of that 1500 into goodies for the weapon, go with a nice RRA AR or something similar like a Colt.
I haven't had much luck with accuracy in either platform. My neighbor had a mini-30 and I found it no better than the AK in accuracy. The trigger of the Mini was better, but it did fail to feed one time. Where as I have a few AK's and not even the Maadi's have ever malfunctioned. The AK's I...
Electrical contact cleaner does a nice job if the weapon is dismantled, but don't use it excessively on plastic parts. The spray from electrical contact cleaner freezes parts and the plastic stuff can crack.
Always be careful when cleaning any mechanically operated machine, like a firearm...
The action alert IMHO is the honorable government for the great state of Illinois. Period.
I'm saddened by this, but not angry nor surprised. I think skunks stink by nature, water + dirt makes mud by nature, and Governments do what the do best by nature. Especially in Illinois by...

This is troubling, because I picked up that 17 on the same day from the same vendor, and the 17 has yet to malfunction in any way. Have you had any issues with the uber-Mauser you purchased from that source? Reading of this trial makes me want to look twice at the 17. Just curious if...
El Tejon got my oldest boy a Winchester M67A for his 7th birthday. I think he paid $125 for it.
Great gun, should serve you well.

Oops, looks like Kirk paid $150 for it.
For the children,
El T has stocked the safe of the nephews quite well. The reaction should be overwhelming. This will be the first scoped firearm for the eldest.
Nephew #2 sleeps with the 'American Rifleman' at night. So his stainless rifle should do well.
This will make firearm #4...
I've killed two this year in my Chicken Coop.
#1. Found him inside one of the chicken stalls. He was laying down and I thought it was a cat, since I could only see his back. I petted the nice kitty, and he nearly bit my hand. I then went into the house, grabbed a lever .22LR with .22LR...
My brother "El Tejon" bought one for my oldest kid when he turned 7, and I found that he could only shoot it from a bench. It's a serious rifle and heavy. I got him a Cricket and it has a better LOP for kids and better weight.
The Model 17 is an excellent firearm.
Shot about 100 rounds threw it so far. This is by far the neatest .22 handgun I've owned. Very easy to shoot and accurate. And the Trigger is VERY nice.
