I have used them since the early ‘90’s, and much prefer them to conventional cup and core bullets from a high velocity rifle......but, it has absolutely nothing to do with lead toxicity. I think that the mono bullets are superior to the majority of cup and core bullets for game.....especially...
I rarely carry a back-up, though each vehicle has a back-up! My back-up is generally a cool weather firearm....ankle holsters are a bit obvious when wearing shorts! memtb
Congratulations on one heck of a haul! I’ve always thought the Ruger #1’s are the most attractive rifles made.....though, I don’t even own one.
I did, in fact get to shoot one about 12 or so years ago......in a 416 Rigby! Was expecting to get “rocked” a little.....really wasn’t bad! Though...
If those are your only options.....the shotgun, provided you have proper ammunition! The other firearms may prompt you to shoot a bear much farther away than an actual defense situation! You will be in a deep pile of “pooh”, if the investigation, and there “will” be an investigation, deems the...
Speaking for my self only.....since my childhood, I’ve wanted my personal shooting range. However, it was not my top priority for my move to a rural area.
I took an approximate 20% pay cut, moved over 1800 miles from my birthplace to escape the “unwashed masses”! I wished to live in a...
My revolvers, other than 22 rimfires, have never had factory ammo run through them....most have never fired a jacketed bullet!
Our semi-autos used as self defense handguns, carry factory ammo in them.....and have actually fired some factory ammunition!
Heck.....we have several rifles...
I certainly like pretty firearms....but, have no desire to own any. I see the beauty in a “utility” firearm that “beautifully” performs the task for which it was purchased! memtb
Good luck in your quest! I would certainly love to help you.....but, can only be envious! :p I’ve been diligently searching for some 4227, to push some 400 grainers out of my 460 XVR. It’s supposed to be quite accurate and I should gain about 100 fps over my WW296! I may never know! :fire...
Unless your hunting involves long range.....in excess of 500 yards.
While I personally do not advocate some of the extreme ranges that many shooters take game....under near perfect conditions, 600 to 800 yard shots on big game are certainly enhanced by the use of boat tail bullets! memtb
As I’m far behind on work, and haven’t read all of these posts, I’ll simply add....yes I do remember those days! Often, rifles or shotguns were proudly displayed in the back window of a pickup truck.....at the high school!
How times have changed! memtb
A slight typo.....fatigue and lack of sleep, doesn’t promote accuracy! Should have been 10 years old! ;) Good catch, you were paying attention....move to the front of the class! memtb
I killed my first deer at 1 years old, with a 410. My Dad stepped it off at around 55 yards. Believe me.....it was just the deers bad day. I didn’t hit were I was aiming, the slug didn’t penetrate very deeply and had I not hit a major vein in the neck.....the deer would have likely died of old...
Exactly!! I noted that in “ my” perspective it was somewhat limited! In no way am I a hater. I, through hand-loading can make my revolver more versatile!
I was merely following-up on the OP. It’s just not my “cup of tea”! For those that like/want it, go for it! Within the applications...
This is merely my perspective as a hand-loader. These revolvers are somewhat limited in “all around” use! They are fairly large and fairly heavy with limited accuracy and horsepower when using 45LC.
If I’m gonna carry a revolver as described above, I’d prefer to carry a S&W 460 XVR (5”...
Quote: Also, in case you didn't know, the mere sound of a shotgun, rifle or handgun being chambered will just send the intruder fleeing in the opposite direction ;)
I think the criminal is much easier to arrest “if” they are not fleeing the scene! ;) memtb
As I read this......My mind immediately jumped to a date not a dollar value! For which my answer was .....around 1967 or ‘68! ;)
In an attempt to more accurately answer the question.....it solely depends upon the cartridge. For some of the African, dangerous game cartridges, you can easily...
For any big game hunting.....it’s difficult to beat the .338 dia. cartridges. Obviously, they are “not” needed for smaller big game.....but, that does not lessen their effectiveness! There would be a lot of well established competition for that caliber/cartridge as a “new” Weatherby offering...
Maybe not a klutz, maybe older, and carried a firearm more hours than many. I have lived the vast majority of my 68 years carrying a firearm, often in inhospitable situations....a fall or drop will happen! memtb
