Might I suggest that the curve plotted by the data garnered in your survey is not statistically indicative of anything unless compared to age distribution of THR members in general?
I feel the same way in big cities, but i'm aware that it's a stress response on my part and not really a rational response to an actual threat. Big difference between what COULD happen and what's actually remotely LIKELY to happen.

Actually, I've been using steel bbs to good effect. (No ricochets unless I miss). Thing is, there's a lot of stuff in my kitchen and laundry that wouldn't react well to pellets, bullets, or lead shot.

IMO, anything that may be carried cocked (SA) needs to be carried cocked & LOCKED.
Otherwise, if it can be carried DA hammer down, a passive automatic/ internal firing pin block or other firing pin safety should be adequate.
So... 1911s, HPs, CZs, etc (and some HKs) really NEED a manual safety...
I'll second the S&B fmj for penetration. Fiocchi fmj is also good, I think they tend to load them a bit hotter. Use whichever you can get, as long as it feeds, fires, & flings reliably in your wife's gun.
