Waterfowlers please weigh in: essential gear?

No, if you wear stocking-foot waders, you wear a pair of lace-up boots over the feet. The lace-up boots don't pull off because they fit so much better than the built-in wader boots. I wear an old pair of L.L. Bean type pac boots with the pacs removed to make room for the neoprene waders.

Turkeys aren't the smartest bird in the woods.

I went chukar hunting once. That was more than enough to convince me to never do it again. They actually sounded like they were laughing at us as they glided down the canyon. I think I'd rather take my chances going into a biker bar and calling them all faggots. At least that would be over...

Last Turkey Hunt, worst year yet.

I've got a Colt SAA (single action army) in .45 Colt and all it does is break springs. I like my Ruger Blackhawks much better.

Waterfowlers please weigh in: essential gear?

Boy, if you even see 80 ducks, you will have a good hunt. I'm very lucky to see a dozen where I hunt. People talk about 'getting their limit.' I'm happy if I come home with 3 or 4.

Waterfowlers please weigh in: essential gear?

Non-leaking chest waders are essential and choose a pair that are right for the water temps you'll be in. You have to purchase a current federal "duck stamp". They have a different name but I can't think of it, besides, everyone will know what you want if you say duck stamp. Use a repeating...

Outdoor life parts ways with Aram Von Benedikt

Decades ago my brother and I scored tags in Wyoming for a limited 'any elk hunt'. I had never been on this type of "hunt" before and was amazed when it turned into an unlimited shooting gallery. We spied a cow and calf down a high hill and we each shot once at about 350 yards. I hit the cow and...

Welp, I was given a Hawken

I like making some black powder accessories. I obtained a weird cow's horn that looks like a pointing dog on one side and a duck on the other. I'm making a powder horn from it and have it ready to go except for the polishing and securing the base with brass pins (and epoxy around the edge). Here...

Turkeys aren't the smartest bird in the woods.

Turkeys are stupid IMO. Bowhunting one morning and not seeing any deer from my tree stand, I saw a hen pass by. Just for something to do I dug out a mouth reed call and gave one 'putt'. That hen stopped and started twisting her head every which way for a timed 40 minutes. I think the paranoid...

Have you ever noticed some animals use you, as protection?

Kestrels are cool. During the dove season they're up soaring around always faking me out by mistaking them for a dove. However, one stole a winged dove from me once and tried to fly away with it. He could only get about 8 ft. high because the dove was as big as him. I ran after him swatting...

    Updates from Taxidermist

A year is what a lot of taxidermists would tell me if the hide was being sent to a tannery. Tanneries take a long time and a certain percentage of capes, etc. are lost when the hair is damaged in any way. Any taxidermist who is in demand has employees who do the cape preps, place the...

    Spring Saskatchewan Black Bear

This reminds me of a story told by a friend. He was using a bow hunting deer near a corn feeder when a young bear came up and started eating all the corn on the ground. It stayed around most of the afternoon. He stood up and yelled at it and waved his arms but the dumb youngster kept snuffling...

    Come to the light...

I always use a light since hearing about some stupid rich guy who shot the guide coming to fetch him after dark. The guide wasn't using a light and the guy saw the white of his T-shirt under the open collar and shot him, mistaking him for a deer. :fire: If I didn't use a light, I'd never find...

    Spring Saskatchewan Black Bear

I've killed 2 bears and ate them. They give a pretty fair amount of meat and their taste depends on what they had been eating and their age just like most any other animal. One bear I got was a smallish young bear that had been eating blueberries mainly and was the most tender meat I ever ate...

    Spring Saskatchewan Black Bear

Nice bears and a very good write-up. Congrats to you and your dad. If Florida would ever reopen a bear season, it would be the same here. Yes, there are 400 lb. bears in Florida although their hair isn't as thick.

    Photo/hunting safari Africa

In my 56 years of marriage I have found that pandering to your wife's wishes is the best course to take. However, I would still do it in a "hunting country", not Kenya, so that you could possibly hunt a couple of animals especially if the guide (and NOT you) suggests it. Women tend to listen to...

    No RESIDENT NV Tags Again

I'm 80 and still hunt, however, not everyone is as lucky as me. Auto crashes and other accidents when you're young come back to haunt you when you're old. And there are debilitating diseases that knock you down too. Two months ago my dry macular degeneration 'graduated' up to the wet form which...

    No RESIDENT NV Tags Again

I feel sorry for you. Does Nevada allow you tags for your own property if it's large enough or doesn't private land get one any privileges over public land?

Hunting Hogs! In Texas looking for advice!

I've killed about 22-25 hogs (I never kept track) but I always hated to clean the non-stinky ones because they were so hard to skin. However, of the hogs I've cleaned (butchered), only one had any fat at all and that was a chubby gilt that had about 1/6th the fat that this video shows. I still...
