Tikka T3X CTR, 24" and Savage Model 12 LRP, Both in 6.5 Creed

In my ongoing evaluations for a 1 K bench gun for a recreational shooter, factory ammo, I find myself circling these two and I`m sure that they`ll make my final 3 or 4. Both are within my budget. The Tikka because of Tikka`s general reputation as a high quality factory gun, accurate, great...

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Put medium rings on my Model 12 LRPV. Still needed a riser to get a proper view down the barrel of the scope.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Could one not put too much cheek pressure on the stock when shooting off the bench as well? Shot going high?

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Thanks. LOL! I`ve always thought of proper scope mounting as a bit of an art form! Talking about saving " lots of aggravation ", perhaps there`s something to be said for letting someone who knows what the hell they`re doing in the first place put the thing on the gun ? Maybe the best thing to do...

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Yeah, I`m sure I can get help. I may be over thinking this some as well.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

One of the many things I`ve learned so far is to position myself behind the rifle, with it and myself aligned, as much as possible, with the target. Thanks everybody for the input. It is sincerely appreciated.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Under the heading, " Rule of thumb", I wish that there was some sort of guide (maybe there is? ) that would indicate that, as a rule, low rings are for a certain size range of objectives. Same for medium and high.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Yes, I`ve been sort of concentrating on guns in the roughly $1K range that have adjustable combs. Remington, Browning, Bergara. I wish the Tikka CTRs had adjustable combs.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Would be long range target (steel ) off of a bench.

Scope Height vs. Cheek Weld ?

Please excuse this basic question, but I`m pretty basic when it comes to my knowledge level regarding rifles and rifle shooting. How does one tell, prior to rifle purchase, if some sort of cheek riser is going to be necessary for a proper cheek weld? I`m sure scope ring heights have something to...

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Savage sells a ton of the Axis line. No doubt that their place in the pricing scale has more than a little to do with that. Are they the best hunting/traditional style rifles out there from a fit and finish/quality standpoint? No, perhaps not, but they afford the average Joe hunter/shooter ( AKA...

    How many rounds?

If it`s baked on carbon, how about an over night soak in C4?

    How many rounds?

So V, by extension, would you say that someone who shoots jacketed bullets exclusively ( which I assume is most folks? ) should expect little, if any, lead accumulation?
  14. T

    How many rounds?

I would think that if the jackets came apart, so would any accuracy.

    How many rounds?

That`s a question in my mind as well. If one shoots only jacketed bullets, shouldn`t lead accumulation be essentially negligible? Then again, I`m always in need of education on this stuff!

    How many rounds?

What, if anything, is noted to be particularly good at lead removal?

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

New scope and better trigger? No reason to think that Axis won`t continue to shoot great ( maybe even better! ).

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Yeah, Savage sure has sold ( and continues to sell ) a ton of those " pigs " . No doubt a major contributor to that is the price point and . the sales that periodically come up at places like Cabela`s, amounting to the fact that a lot of folks can get a " bargain basement " rifle that`s proven...

Be sure and give us an update after a range session.

    CZ 457 Varmint 17HMR??

Well, in reality, unless things have changed, CCI and Winchester are the only two manufacturers of 17 HMR loads. Whether or not they tailor specifications for other brands ( Federal, Hornady, etc ) I really don`t know.
