Make sure to pattern your choke and load at various distance all the way out to you max distance. I've seen more than one choke/load combo that will give tight but "donut" pattern as distance increases.
Here in FL you don't need much but you need water.
It doesn't matter if you are just going to the tree stand 500 yards from your farm house or going 5 miles in public land, you need water. We had a guy here who almost died of heatstroke when he went hunting less than half mile from his house...
I use Marlin Guide Gun loaded with 375gr WFN cast bullet and enough 3031 to get it to 1,450 fps... a warm load but not hot. That rifle/load will completely penetrate large hog from any angle. I bet if I used 450 gr cast bullet loaded to about 1,500 fps it will penetrate a bull from bow to...
When I have to go tracking after wounded hog I carry the most lethal rifle I have in the safe and that's a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. I keep it loaded with 375gr WFN cast bullet with enough 3031 to get it moving to 1,450 fps. It make two holes (entrance and exit) on hogs from all directions...
Any shotgun will work as long as you know and work within the limitations of the gun. My son took his first turkey with a single shot bolt action 410. I think it was a shot of 1/2 oz #4 from about 7 yards and it was KO'd.
I've never seen the 30-06 version but I have seen it in action in 308 version.
My friend's 12 y/o son uses them in his Savage rifle. Earlier this year he shot a 170 lb. sow from +/- 90 yards. The bullet entered low just behind the left shoulder and exited out the front right side. The hog...
My typical carry for few hour hunt is...
Remington 700 ADL in .243 Winchester (with 9 rounds on the butt cuff)
Short barrel Ruger Single Six in 22 mag
Cold Steel Hunter knife with sharpening stone
Leatherman or Gerber multi-tool
2 pairs of rubber glove
Small first aid kit
Surefire P6...
I occasionally use portable ground blinds as in some location it's the only choice. I like to pack light so I use one of those umbrella type blind. It's tall enough to hind a sitting person and give you very good view all around but very light and small when folded. I usually use it in front...
I used to carry a Government model (5" barrel) many years ago.
I kept it loaded with 8+1 rounds of my handload consisting of Hornady XTP 230gr with enough AA#5 to get 920 fps. from that pistol. I never shot a bear with it but did shoot couple of hogs and deer and they worked great with...
Not every rifle will work with every ammo.
Some combo will work well while others will not.
I have a Savage 10 in .308 Winchester that refuses to group 100 gr Federal Power Shok and yet shoots tiny groups with 100 gr Winchester Power Point. Remington 100 gr Core Lokt fall somewhere in the...
I have an older (1980's) Remington 700 BDL in 35 Whelen that came with amazing factory trigger. The trigger is light, crisp and has very little over travel. It feels as good or better than most aftermarket target trigger. On the other hand, I have a recent (2004) Remington 700 ADL in .243...
You can't eliminate human odor so I don't worry about it too much. I try to minimize exposing my hunting clothes to petrol product smell and strong smell from food (like morning bacon) but that's it. I just hunt with the wind to my face.
BTW. I have seen hogs that's were 400-500 yards...
What a shame :banghead:
I would call the local DMR or game warden and report it.
I would also call the local sheriff office and report that someone has been trespassing on private property with weapon. You want to have everything on record just in case they catch someone.
I'm a meat hunter so I frequently let trophy animals walk.
About 2 weeks ago I was up in the stand before the sun came up. Just as it was light enough to see I see a 6 pt. buck walk by not more than 50 yards away. Not a huge buck but good size by FL standard.
Not 15 minutes later the sun...
The most important thing is to kill the animal quickly. I usually kill game for food so I normally take headshots so the animal drops on the spot and doesn't have the time to dump all kind of hormones and other chemicals into the body as fight-flight reflex. An animal that is headshot and...
I have a friend from GA who hunts hogs with me here every November and he has been using his Remington BDL 22-250 for past 10+ years and he always takes home couple hogs. He's a very good shot and he only takes head shots on hogs and never seen him miss... from 30 yards to 300 yards. Every hog...
Couple years ago my buddy went out to hunt a "special" hammock he had scouted for past couple months on a public land. To get out there he had to hike 7+ miles as there was no road in the area. On that hammock was a large buck with a huge rack that he had on the game cam for past few weeks...
We shoot them in the head here, usually just below and slightly forward of the ear to hit their brain cavity. We want them to drop right there because if they run 25 yards we could loose them in the palmetto thickets and if they run 50 yards chance of finding it is only about 50%. If they go 75...
