Hi
I like stainless if you are carrying it CCW.
Detonics CombatMasters and pretty much their entire line are excellent stainless firearms. Pick your size.
Ed Browns' bobtail. Dan Wessons' now very expensive bobtail commander.
Check Wilson as well. Colt's are classics in 1911's as...
Glocks and accidental discharges? This is not the first, nor will it be the last.
The Glocks 'features' are also it's greatest liability. Pull gun, pull trigger, gun goes bang. Great for LEO and or people that don't train that much, and really aren't that into shooting.
I'm not sure any...
Lots.
First find something that has rounds at .18 cents each, right now. 440 rounds, 85 bucks.
It's light, it's easy to carry, and the trigger isn't great, but passable.
First, define 'cheap'.

Appears that LEO turned New Orleans into a free steal zone:

No consequences.
It DID happen here, and not long ago.
Utah passed a law to stop such actions:

The scary part of Katrina was the door to door home invasions by the government to take firearms out of the hands of legal owners.

The L.A. riots weren't that long ago. LEO and firefighters pulled out of areas,
because they were targets, easily hit, and were taking fire. A perimeter was established. Pretty much they let things go, since they couldn't control it.
My friends in the Pacific Palisades setup road blocks...
Politics determine how your law is applied in your area. Since the HR suggests we don't discuss law, I'm not going to make a recommendation for your HD gun, since I can't discuss your states law.
What I would suggest is you contact your LEO and DA, and an attorney that would represent you, and...

"I have been looking around though, I like those 18" barreled STG58 DSA FAL's in .308.
I wonder if, with a short suppressor (which I know would take some NFA paperwork), this could be a viable, practical self/home defense rifle. I do live out in the country, and I would also probably use...

"Conclusions:
Here’s the bottom line: Rifles > Shotguns > Pistols.
Do as you please, but that’s just the facts. "
Since we don't have a lot of data on the subject:
.223 War seems to indicate it isn't a great stopper.
7.62 X 39: Looks like the minimum for a proven stopper to me.
My rule of thumb is compare the weight of the attacker to the same size feral pig, or deer. Sure the pigs are tougher, but...
Mini 30? That sounds like a great gun. Fun to shoot, accurate,
light, and not absurdly expensive. You may have sold me.
I just looked at the ft-lbs of energy for the 7.62 x 39.
I have three pistol rounds that with proper loads exceed the 1600 ft-lb range, the last nearly doubles the 7.62.
They...
Merkel's and Chapuis work just fine. They are in the 4-7 grand range, new.
9.3 x 74R hits like a 375 H&H with the right ammo, and carries and shoots like a 6 pound 22lr.
The point of a double stopper is your first shot, taken in haste, stuns or drops the animal for a second, giving you a chance...
Mr. Watson:
yes, the gun was converted to .450 Nitro Express, and a stalking safety added.
Jack Huntington's gun, and work. That's Jack in the pictures shooting the gun.
He used it to kill a beefalo, around 2200 pounds, that felt like the truck they were in was a threat to his territory. Or...
