You should be able to find a lot of S&W Model 10s police trade-ins for less than $300. There is no better "step up" for you without having to spend much.

It's an easy addiction. If I had only one gun, it would be my S&W 29 Special Hunter with the underlugged barrel and unfluted cylinder. The 44 Magnum isn't the monster folklore makes it out to be. It's actually reasonably easy and accurate to shoot for trained and experienced shooters. .

I've shot several AR-15s with great enjoyment and success, but I've yet to own one of my own. I'd like to buy one and keep it around for self-defense, short-range plinking and for SHTF reasons, but I don't currently have access to a range. It may be a while (a year?) until I can get to one...
