Do you make your own powder?

I made about a half pound of powder a year or so ago. I did it just to check the experience off my list, and because I had to buy all the ingredients, and a rock tumbler to use as a ball mill, it cost me much more than a few pounds of goex would have. I still have enough ingredients to make...

Here is an old Johnny Cash song on the topic... The Last Gunfighter Balad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_N4cJ0VcDE

A wiser man than I once told me........

Yeah... I had a hand spring break on a Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy right after I bought it. I remember someone advising me to buy a complete set of internal parts for the pistol, and fitting each one of them individually to the pistol while it was still new, so that replacing each worn part...

If I can buy real BP, is there any point in using 777?

I use 777 pellets for my .50 cal rifle. The reason for this is the lack of residue, and ease of cleaning, since my rifle does not have a removable breech plug nor an easily cleaned ignition passage. Next time I buy a rifle, it will be easier to clean so that I do not have to buy commercially...

How do you load a powder horn...

I found a plastic cap with a built-in pour spout and snap-on cover that screws onto a standard plastic pyrodex or 777 jar. It works pretty well for filling up my powder flasks.

    this can't be good

As far as ASM/Pietta part compatibility, I can say that Pietta parts, with minor fitting, work in my ASM 1851 Confederate Navy. I had to replace a bolt spring, the hand, and a few other parts here ant there. The Pietta stuff did pretty well after some minor filing and stoning. Good luck with...

    Blocked nipple?

You have quite a find if that pistol is really as old as the vendor claimed. I have never had the privilege of tinkering with any firearms of that age, and you are certain to get a range of advice on the issue. Anything from "soak it in penetrating oil and shoot it" to "put it in a museum"...

    Speaking of Pietta and Cabelas...

It sounds to me like a small business owner's last ditch desperate effort to make a sale. I do not blame the guy for being frustrated at the low prices Cabela's offers, but that a pretty cheap shot. I could be convinced to buy a BP revolver from a small shop for a slightly higher price if...

    Anti-seize lube on nipples?

I like Gorilla Grease. It comes in little white plastic container about the same size as a percussion cap can. The grease is purple, has a pleasant smell to it, and has never failed to allow my cylinder nipples to be removed.

    Has Cabelas lost their mind?

That is a bit bizarre, but their BP stuff always fluctuates pretty wildly in price. Good think you "pulled the trigger" on that deal when you did... Pictures when it comes in!!!

is the "leatherman wave" any good?????

I have one that I bought in 2003 that I still use. Be careful with the wire cutters. It is easy to overstress them if you start trying to cut cable or hard steel wire, and after that the pliers are hard to open and close freely. Other than that its a great tool.

Opinions on Brass Frame Remington 1858 Buffalo 12" revolver

I have three brass frame 1851 Navy replicas... I love all three of them and shoot them whenever I have the chance, but my Pietta 1858 STEEL framed replica is a much better gun. If you check Cabela's website continually for a few months, you can probably find a nice '58 or 1860 steel frame...

Oh no! My new Walker broke!!!!!

I had that happen to a Pietta '51 Confederate Navy a few weeks ago... The pistol was practically brand new out of the box. It had never been fired, and the action had probably only been cycled several dozen times. I took it apart to do some 'smithing' on the bolt and was testing it after...

Western Revolver Replicas on How It's Made Tonight

I missed the episode as well, but would like to see it... What else did they feature on that episode??? I am going to try to catch it on a re-run on my DVR, but none of the shows coming up list any kind of "western revolver replica" on their information line... EDIT: It appears to be either...

    First attempt at making lube.

I am using 1/8" hard felt from the link above for both my .44 and .36 Revolvers. As I mentioned earlier, I really prefer this to most of the storebought wads, even though it does tend to be thicker...

    First attempt at making lube.

What I meant by that statement was that they seemed to fit the cylinders better, and their stiffness made them easier to handle and load than many of the storebought wads I have used. That is mainly a result of the felt I used and not the lube though... I did not compare their ability to keep...

    First attempt at making lube.

I too made my first attempt at making lube a few days ago, and had a chance to try it out as well... I used a recipie from the "firing line" forum due to my haste to get the ingredients (lack o' mutton tallow and real beexwax) http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=354926 . I...

    1851 Confederate Navy

I have fired plenty .454 balls from my '51 Confederate Navy with no problems whatsoever... That particular size of ball results in a nice ring of lead being shaved off the ball, ensuring a tight fit. The box of .451 balls I purchased initially for the pistol were so loose that no ring was shaved...

    1851 A.S.M. Confederate Navy

It looks like a generic coil spring. The spring is bent slightly, but is getting the job done... The back of the hand looks pretty chewed up from the poor fit of the spring, so I am hoping that when I get a new hand in there and fit it correctly, the pistol will cycle properly(did I mention the...

    1851 A.S.M. Confederate Navy

The pistol in question has had just that mod done on it. I think the mod was done poorly, and is causing the pistol to function poorly. I am going to try to do it right with a replacement hand and spring. If that does not work, I will go back to the coiled spring that is inserted through the...
