Whats my best option for an HD shell in a small cottage house?-Saiga 12

BB, really??? And, No. 4 buck is "well considered"?; by whom? Not a single LE agency that I know of specifies # 4 buck. The fact is, it is considered "marginal" for HD. The recommended loads for HD are 00 and 1B, with 1B now considered the better of the two. There is actually a thread going on...

    2 3/4 vs 3 Inch 00 Buck For HD

Sounds like you are about ready to move up to 3.5" loads for HD. Be sure to come back and let us know how that works out for you.

    Sling swivel mounts

I would start by looking at Uncle Mike's swivels as, IMO, they are the most adaptable. Their customer service people are usually very knowledgeable and helpful. http://www.unclemikes.com/accessories/shotgun-swivels

    2 3/4 vs 3 Inch 00 Buck For HD

I'm guessing that you are unaware of the existence of LE132-1B: 2 3/4", 15-pellet, reduced recoil. IMO, the perfect HD load. For HD I will not use birdshot, 3" loads, or anything less than 1B (#4 is only marginal). Good luck to you sir.

    Rifled Slugs

I have shot several different slugs through several different guns, mostly 870's and Benelli M4's. My observations: Slugs perform differently through different gun/barrel combinations. There is more gun dependent variation than with buckshot. Best results are obtained through smooth bore...

    new remington 870

Buy an 18 1/2" CYL or I/C barrel with a simple bead (directly from Remington Parts), add a 2-shot extension (I prefer Wilson), a sidesaddle, a simple light and a short, standard, LOP stock (such as a Remington LEO, or Hogue), and you are GTG.

    Ported barrels....

Better to have a King Armory brake/suppressor installed on your gun. It does everything as advertised: tighter patterns, flash suppression, recoil reduction. The only downside is the cost - about $200, including installation...

    Refinishing an 870

I think the best "money no object" finish is NP3 Plus http://www.robarguns.com/np3%20plus.html But that will set you back about $450! I have had a gun Armor-Tuff finished by Wilson Combat and, while the cost was about $250, the finish is worlds better than parkerization.

If you think your shotgun isn't loud enough, get it ported! ;)

    Loads for home defense?

Good luck to you, sir. I truly hope that you will never need to use a shotgun to defend yourself and your loved ones.

    Loads for home defense?

IMO, one has to be as perfect with a shotgun as with a a rifle because, at typical HD distance, a shotgun pattern is essentially about a 2" hole. Out past, say, 25 yds., the widening shot pattern is such that shot placement becomes even more critical, as one is responsible for all 9 pellets...

    Loads for home defense?

You know, I think you're right. If at zero-dark-thirty my house is attacked by a flock of angry pheasants or if I find one of my children being mauled by a crazed woodpecker, birdshot would surely end the threat. And, especially in in preparation for multiple intruders, I also would prefer to...

    Loads for home defense?

Things certainly have changed. Generally speaking, I think shot shell technology has come a long way in the past several years, especially with the introduction of the FliteControl loads. While #1 buck was generally acknowledged to perform best ballistically, I was never able to find a #1 buck...

    Loads for home defense?

As I said earlier: "Any load that is going to be effective will need to penetrate walls to have enough power to penetrate bad guys. If our only concern was to be sure we didn't penetrate walls, we would use BB guns. However, BB guns will not stop bad guys. Therefore, we must use loads that will...
