    Swiss powder?

Marty, I use Swiss in my '73 Winchester 44 WCF (44-40). I have found that it takes about 10% less by weight of Swiss FFG to = the velocity of Goex FFG / Schuetzen (36 grs vs 40 grs). My lot of Swiss weighs about 8% more by volume than Goex FFG. Have fun! w30wcf

Pros and cons bp in a 30-30

One thing I forgot to mention - I get better results with large pistol primers. Slamfire 1 - b.p. velocity (Swiss 3F) 43 grs. by weight - 1,450 f.p.s. Arkansas Paul - Actually, the rifle is actually easier to clean. About 4 to 5 patches and that's it! Getting a completely clean patch after...

    Air space

Yes indeed. A muzzleloader and a cartridge rifle are two completely different animals. Personally, I shoot cartridge rifles and always use compression because I have found it improves accuracy and gives the least fouling. I have fire many .45 Colt b.p. rounds with powder loaded loosely in...

    Air space

Actually.....it has more to do with bore fouling. Use an uncompressed load in or a b.p. load that has airspace in a cartridge gun and the fouling in the bore is greater than a compressed load. Regarding airspace in b.p. cartridges, way back when, the factories loaded .45-70 "Short Range"...

Pros and cons bp in a 30-30

higene, Yes, Winchester, U.M.C., Rem-Umc, offered the 38-55 black powder cartridge up until the 1930;s or thereabouts. I have loaded b.p. in the .30-30 with aok results. No doubt, Swiss b.p. is the B.P. to use to keep the fouling soft for repeated shots without cleaning in combination with...

    Old? Hodgdon black powder

joelvca, In an article entitled "Black Powder Then And Now" in the Lyman Blackpowder Handbook, first published in 1976, in part, it indicates: "Today, the company is know as Nobel's Explosives Company Ltd., and furnishes much of their blackpowder to the U.S. market. You, the shooter, can buy...

using round balls in BP cartridges?

Back in the late 1800's /early 1900's, U.M.C. offered a .45 Colt Gallery cartridge. The load was 7.0 grs of b.p. and a round ball seated down on top of the powder. I would think that they tested various recipies before offering that powder charge/round ball cartridge(?) One of the things on...
