Moved back to the "other 9mm"

My 4" Rossi 972 is excellent with .38 special. As it can handle .357, the lighter rounds are very controllable and I've used it in IDPA and IPSC competition. It isn't as well-made as my S&W 686, but looks almost identical and was modeled after it. I do not recommend going with only one handgun...

From the lcp to the lc9s pro.

Agreed. I've enjoyed carrying and learning the Ruger LC9. It's a great gun. Easy to carry and insanely reliable. I have fed this gun Remington, Cor-Bon, Federal, Sellier & Bellot, Wolf, anything, it always fires. The Ruger LC9 offers the same reliability as a revolver. No matter. Just...

Ruger GP-100 vs. Smith 586 and 686 both in .357 with 6 inch barrels.

Here's my 686+ Combat Magnum: I've also tried a friend's Ruger GP100 at the range, so I can compare them. These are basically the same gun. If you just want a 6" wheelgun, get the Ruger. If you want 7 rounds and the best trigger, get the Smith. The price is about the same for both, but...

Is there something inherently different in Glock pistols?

The Ruger LC9 series now has a 9+1 magazine option. That's 10 rounds onboard a platform not much bigger than an LCP. I've got the original LC9 (not the s model) with the mag disconnect safety out and it's easily the most reliable semi-auto in my lineup. Had one hiccup with the SR9c, due to an...

Has the 12 gauge lost popularity as a HD gun over the past few years

Only speaking for myself, but I've had a few "situations" and what seemed to be natural was: 1. Bump in the night you want to go investigate: handgun 2. Something going on outside and you have time to prepare for it: shotgun That is, if you just need to go check out the front door, make sure...

Possible new twist on 9mm vs. .45

With Ruger's new extended capacity magazine, the LC9 now can hold 11 rounds of 9mm in a platform so small and light you'll forget your carrying it. The SR9c can carry up to 18 rounds of 9mm. Nothing wrong with a .45, nothing at all. They usually shoot great and have punch. Still, in most...

I only have one handgun and

My favorite carry is the Ruger LC9. Because of the improved striker-fire trigger, I'm now looking at the LC9s to replace it. However, I've got a bit of work and aftermarket parts in the gun, so upgrading doesn't feel urgent. The size and weight of the LC9 isn't that much more than the LCP...

How do you practice shooting for SD?

There are two types of ranges - fixed and free. In the fixed type, there are strict rules and officers who enforce them. This is usually the sort where there's a bench and you have to stand in position behind it, and take shots no faster than one every two seconds. In the free type, you can do...

    Concealed carry revolver.

Go to your LGS and handle a Ruger SP101. You'll see. It's too heavy for EDC. Then again, try a S&W 686 in any barrel length shooting .357. You'll find it's a lot of cartridge and not fun to shoot. A snubbie-length .357 means you're basically going to get one shot. After that, all bets are...

    First Wheel Gun

My 686+ 6" is the finest weapon I own. The 638 snubbie was a good addition to the lineup, but the 686 is what I grabbed last time I heard a bump in the night. And that's saying something. Had a 9mm with 18 rounds of DPX closer at hand. Didn't even look toward it - went straight to the Smith...

A quality sportster style .22LR semi-auto that is not Ruger/Marlin/Winchester/Savage?

The Ruger 10/22 is such a great platform because, like an AR, you can replace almost every part of it to built a weapon to your specifications.

Purchasing a new pistol, behind enemy lines

Everybody should have a S&W 686+ 6" in their lineup.

    Home defense reality check

Usually, a handgun is as loud as a handgun. From what we know of real-life defense situations, you won't even hear your firearm. There are real considerations about hearing loss, being blinded, etc. You are never at fault for worrying about these things. But from what we know, in all the...

What is the last gun that you bought?

S&W 638: Had its first outing yesterday at a free range. Tried double-taps, triple-taps, single and double action. After about 20 rounds I was starting to bleed around the web of my hand. This is no range gun but it's a solid defensive carry. Needless to say, the trigger is excellent.

    Ear protection......what type??

Using the Howard Leights. Not electronic, but they plug into my phone and I can listen to music while I shoot.

    S&W .38 caliber "Bodyguard"

Loving my 638 - now with rosewood grips. Some more modifications ahead but it's getting there. Even with .38+P it's a pleasure to shoot. One thing that tends to get overlooked when looking at an M638 is that the humpback design lets you get the web of your hand up higher on the gun, bringing...

Love my 638 - this is such an easy carry.

If you could only have one model J frame what model would it be?

The 638 is the model to beat. Question is, 1.75 in. barrel, or the 2.5 in.? I lean toward the 2.5 in. as it's not much harder to carry but you get more accuracy and velocity out of this model. Of course, it's extremely hard to find one.

when self defense/home invasion turns into 1st degree murder

BSA1 has a good take, and I agree with him. For argument's sake, let's flip this around and look at it from the invader's point of view. Let's say, because this happens from time to time, that what we have is a drunk person (or Alzheimer's patient, mentally ill person, etc.) who enters a home...

    Went with LCR357 instead

The jury is still out, but what we're starting to learn is that a steel-frame snubbie delivers all the recoil back into your hand, wrist, and arm. Part of the fun. The polymer j-frames seem to absorb some amount of the recoil, providing a better shooting experience. Provided that flame-cutting...
