Just a quick update. I cleaned as much as I could without removing the extractor, chambered/extracted a good few times, and it now seems to have 'worn in' sufficiently that I can use the rifle normally. I was actually at the range a few days ago and fired 45 shots with no issues.

No drill mounts for the Enfield are available. One of those should let you mount a scope without damaging the rifle.

It will kick more than your 20g. If you want a soft shooting milsurp rifle, a Swedish Mauser, or Norwegian Krag (both in 6.5x55) may be better (though somewhat more expensive!).

I use the blue Loctite. I'm not really sure that it's necessary, but better safe than sorry!

The only one on your list that I've tried is the Savage Axis, which is badly let down by it's stock. I had a look at a 783 at my local gun shop a few months back, and it didn't do anything for me. It may be a good performer, but I really don't like the molded sling swivels and trigger guard...

Unless I'm mistaken these are made for Winchester in Turkey. Any decent local gunsmith should be able to do it for you (and probably for less than it would cost you to ship it to Winchester).

I got two bucks this year, but nothing last year. So I know the feeling! How does the tag system work? One deer per tag? If so can hunters apply for more once they've filled their tag?

It is probably possible, but the costs involved may mean that it's not worthwhile. Unless the rifle has some sentimental value, it may just be a better bet to buy one in Ireland.

I look forward to seeing some 'real world' reviews on it on the forums when it becomes generally available. I quite like the look of it, and am interested to see what it will retail for here in Europe (typically 2x or more than the US price).
