well guys i worked up a load using 4f goex in my 1851 navy 36 caliber

Those 1970s era black powders were awfully weak compared with Hazard's and what we have available to us now.

1851 navy 36 caliber for deer and hogs will it be enough?

You're under informed sir. 4F is the equivalent of 1850s-1860s Hazard's Pistol Powder. The very powder that the originals were supplied with in loose form and with the paper cartridges. Folks laugh at the poor performance of .31 cap and ball revolvers as they are loading them with coarse 3F...

1851 navy 36 caliber for deer and hogs will it be enough?

When we load our Pietta New Model Belt revolver with 24 grains of Olde Eynsford under a round ball, the round goes supersonic. The damage a .36 round ball or conical ball bullet does is all out of proportion to its paper ballistics. It is far more powerful than a .380 and more like a hot .38...

1851 navy 36 caliber for deer and hogs will it be enough?

During the War of Northern Aggression, a Yankee officer was escorting some Confederate prisoners to the rear when he came upon some fellas trying to harvest some wild hogs. He shot them dead with his last rounds from his '61 Navy. The problem with many folks perception of the prowess of...

.44 black powder revolver load for black bear

You can get 35-37 grains of powder under a round ball without a wad. I would not use Pyrodex but rather, 3F Olde Eynsford. Might even try 30 grains of 4F Olde Eynsford under wad. I would not hesitate to use a 240 grain Kaido Conical with 30 grains of 3F Olde Eynsford. That load hurts my hand...

what to do? 1851 fantasy 44 or sell and buy 1851 36's

Keep them both and buy two more. If you sell the kit gun that you built and tuned and love to shoot so much, you will regret it later. That's a keeper to hand down to your kin. Hardly any recoil with the .36s and they can use less powder and lead so they are more economical to shoot. Might...

    walker charge ?

We've been shooting our ASM Walker with 50 grain charges of 2F for years with no problems at all. Very accurate with round ball and this load.

    .31s?

They shoot and penetrate just fine with 4F powder. This is what was used back in the day before lawyers. As for the lack of conicals for the .31 caliber: Lyman 31950, Hensley & Gibbs #79, Dixie CA0901, Big Lube DD 32 RNFP

Getting involved in black powder shooting

A pound of powder feeding an Old Army 30 grain shots will get you about 230 shots or 38 cylinders worth of shooting. My girls are itching to go shooting and I reckon we'll take them before summer's over but we usually avoid this season due to the heat. We'll probably go in July. Once we get a...

My Black and Decker screw gun is older than yours! Do you have the little gel pads on the left side? 14.4v? Tighten up those holes, you can get a bunch more wads out of that material.
