Excellent recommendation. Contact Mike Green of Green-Ops; he is master class shooter in both IDPA and USPSA. They offer competition classes as well as general handgun classes.
Compared to some classic pistols, Glocks are ugly. Whether this bothers you or not probably depends on how you view a Glock - for you, is it a tool or a toy?

I live in Virginia. You currently need a concealed permit to carry concealed in the car. Also, a concealed permit allows you to purchase more than one handgun per month. I don't carry on my person very often as I'm frequently going into federal buildings.
