    .40 s&w powder

Go to Hodgdon's site for data: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp You should be ok with W231/HP38. I use HP38 for 165 GR RNFP from Xtreme and just started testing with Berry's 165 and 155 RNFPs. For the 165, I use 5 or 5.1 grains of HP38 in a USP 40 full size at 1.130 OAL. You...

Volume of a Pound of powder

It really depends on the powder. The 55 gallons is a volumetric displacement. Two objects may occupy the exact same amount of space, but they may not weigh the same. When I was a cashier at a grocery store in college, a customer asked how much does a gallon of water weighed. We placed it on...

One reason for squib loads on a AP press.

I just started using the powder dispenser from the LNL AP with the micrometer pistol metering insert. I too have noticed the rotor assembly not returning after i had maxed it out during a powder drop It was happening more when I maxed it out harder. It also became less of a problem with more...

I stuck a bullet in the barrel...

Thanks everyone for the replies. It could be the crimp and not enough pressure building before the bullet takes off. The first batch had a heavier crimp. I backed off because I was afraid I may cut through the plating and thinking I was shortening the brass life unnecessarily. Looking at the...

I stuck a bullet in the barrel...

Hi All, I'm developing 38 Special loads for a 586 6" using HP38, Berry's 125 grain HP, mixed brass, and MagTech small pistol primers at 1.470 OAL. When I fired the 7th shot, it was quieter and softer. The bullet stopped about 1.5 inches before exiting the barrel. This was supposedly a 4.3...

Unburned powder in case and barrel, inconsistent burn?

I just started developing 38 Special loads for a 586 6". I used Berry's 125 grain JHP with HP38 at 1.47 OAL. I applied a light crimp with an FCD. 4 grains seemed light so i only made about 6 just to see what it's like and can't tell how dirty it was. I made 12-18 rounds in each charge weight...

    Major uh-oh narrowly avoided

1 powder on the bench is a great and simple rule. I'm new to reloading, and postings like these are a great educational piece. I have more than 1 powder but keep them away. Later on when I start using more than 1, I'll stick to having the in use bottle at the bench and all others will be...

About to load my first round and seeking a litlle advice

I’m about to load my first rounds and will start with a .38 Special using Berry’s 125 grain HP, HP38, and Winchester Small Pistol primer. Berry’s says to use jacketed data. For load data, I am using Lyman’s 49th Edition, Lee’s Modern Reloading, 2nd Edition, and Hodgdon’s website. I have been...

    Forgotten .38spl round

I think it may be ok. Fire it with no other rounds loaded in the cylinder. If it became so weak to the point where the bullet wouldn't clear the forcing cone and binds up the cylinder, you wouldn't have any live rounds pointing at your hand when you try to tap it out.

    Tumbling Question

Thanks for all the suggestions. As long as they're clean, I'm happy. The shine is an added bonus. I spread the polish in but it clumped up anyway. After several minutes, I broke them up with my hand. I'll definitely put the larger diameter brass in first next time. The tumbler is on...

    Tumbling Question

Hi All, I have been reading reloading forums and articles for several months now and have learned quite a bit from the great folks in the reloading community. I’m about to complete my reloading bench and tumbled my first batch of brass today. How long should I tumble my brass? Some say...
