Pancho - I hate to pig pile on top, but I agree with Harmon and 9mmepiphany.
Not that I'd go carrying a custom engraved Valtro around, but definitely the highest quality I could afford.
There's also the intangible of pride of ownership. Sometimes I'll unload my Nighthawk Talon II and just...
the waistband thing is a big thing for me.
So now I carry my Glock exclusively OWB.
1911 - Between the belt and pants
Kahr - iwb or pocket, depending on the gun
S&W 340, LCP - Pocket only.
I keep hearing about the PPS. I've owned several Kahrs. I've got to give that a try.
It seems there are two camps here. Those that find the extra thickness of a double stack gun, no matter how chopped it is to be an issue, and those that don't.
I guess it just highlights how personal a...
My Glock 34 has done this since new. I like it as it makes for faster reloads. No round counting in IDPA, sometimes the course requires you to go to slidelock. So this is a help. Especially since Im left handed and have to overhand the slide rather than just pushing the release.
It was a standard Wilson catalog item for a couple of years in the late 90s. A friend of mine had one. He agonized over the K9 Elite and the Wilson. He ended up with the wilson. Then sold it when the P9 came out and got more for it than he paid.
The trigger was buttery smooth.
There are...
One other thought/point to the OP, although an IWB is a very popular option, don't forget about a holster that goes in between the belt and your pants. If you have a cover garment, it pulls the gun in as snug as an IWB, but without the need for extra room in your pants.
For those of us that...
don't bother. Its a plastic gun. No plastic gun has style.
Don't get me wrong. I love my Kahr PM9, Glock 34 and M&P 45. But they're about pure function. Not style.
I actually carry my G34 (same as a 35, but in 9mm) regularly in a leather OWB holster. Its bulky, but that bulk is outside my pants, so I don't notice it.
The holster is a high ride with a fairly radical FBI cant to it, so it isn't too bad in the car. Even still the bbl hangs out below my...
The gun shop/range is Hoffmans in CT. Unfortunately, they are a surly group of people. Not my favorite. I don't buy there, but if I didn't have access to friends' guns to try or a piece of land to shoot on, I'd probably buy stuff there just for that reason..
Here are a couple of thoughts re carrying a 1911.
I've been carrying for years but just started carrying a 1911 last year. It has been a learning experience so maybe you can benefit from some of my mistakes.
First, you should realize that the 1911 is slimmer than 9mm M&Ps, Glocks, or Ruger...
Here's the REAL answer.
Almost any of the guns mentioned above will give you great service. You can't go wrong with just about any XD, M&P, SR9/40 or many of the other guns mentioned.
What one works best for YOU is an entirely different story. You need to go down and fondle them at...

Its tough to beat a used glock for someone who is relatively new to shooting. Very unintimidating and as reliable as semi-autos get.
He won't go wrong with a G17 police trade in. Its a great gun to grow with.
Don
I never saw the purpose of those things.
If you are going to extend the length of the grip, why not carry an extended mag and get more capacity for the extra length.
Kahr sells a mag specifically for the PM40 that bumps the mag capacity and gives you more to hold onto...
I own a PM9. I found the PM40 a bit difficult to shoot quickly and accurately. So I went with the smaller gun.
I don't know the OPs skill level, size or strength, but don't forget about the larger Kahr P40.
Its just as slim, but with a slightly longer grip and bbl. The P40 is about the same...
Tizona - you raise a great point about it being a wonderful era to be buying a pistol
I call the 70s and 80s the dark days of gun manufacturing. The makers had given up on a lot of the hand fitting because labor was too expensive, but modern CNC machining centers with their .0005 tolerances...
Wow, you're a real fan.
But there are others that are similarly reliable. The M&P and the XD immediately come to mind.
However all of them are fat little porkers. The best gun in the world does you no good if its left at home because its uncomfortable to carry.
Everyone is different...
IDPA is International Defensive Pistol Association.
It was formed by a some legends of defensive pistol shooting (Bill Wilson, Larry Vickers, Ken Hackathorne, and Walt Rauch) as a counter to the growing gamesmanship in IPSC/USPSA.
They wanted to return practical shooting to its more PRACTICAL...
