My first (and at this point only) AK is a Saiga in 308 and I based my decision on what I read on forums. The only drawback is the looks, but I will be converting to pistol grip and then will have a factory new AK in 308 for not much more than $400.

davek, I could have written that post myself, I agree 100% with everything you said. I went ahead and sold my SKS (which I loved, and will get another) and bought a Saiga 308. Couldn't be happier. There will be a FAL someday though!

While my budget will someday allow a FAL or M14, until I do the Saiga 308 I just purchased is a great value for what you get. Supposedly, hi cap mags will be available from Saiga. Next year someone said. Here is one link, (I think I read another discussion of this somewhere else also)...
