Well for one I know it is not due to the lack of cleaning. we clean our rifles after every time we shoot, and once a week if we don't.

I think that a lighter caliber varmint rifle is the way to go, .223 is a good place to consider, i think so at least. you might even try an SKS. I hope to go coyote hunting with an SKS as soon as I can get ahold of one :)
