Coincidentally, I did just that. In fact I used to hunt with an engineer for one of the larger ammo makers. His particular choice in handguns for wild boar was a 4" S&W model 58 he had converted to .45 Colt. His load of choice was a 260 gr Keith bullet at just under 1000 fps - everything he...
BTDT - I won a S&W 57 at a match. I had .44 and .45 revolvers and did not need to add a caliber - but it had a couple of boxes of ammo with it and I made the mistake of shooting it - still got it (and added 3 more .41s) 40 years later...I can resist anything, but temptation
Thanks for the link, I had not seen it. I'm not being critical of the author and I'm not really shocked at the results as I've found that pretty much as well.
I know he was trying to keep his tests within the SAAMI spec. for the cartridge but Underwood and Buffalo Bore do make some better...
That 1917 is super neat! I have a 1917 S&W cut to 3 3/4" but it is not nearly as pretty - I did put a good front sight on it and had it bead blasted and blued. The other S&W is a model 28 I converted to .45 Colt (it has a spare .45 ACP cyliinder). Jim
I have had one of these for quite some time but I have not shot it that much. I really like the design. I don't think I'd hesitate to shoot something in it that I would shoot in any of my S&W .44s but, as others have mentioned, it is not a Ruger Redhawk or even a Colt Anaconda. Which doesn't...
At the risk of folks thinking I'm paranoid, within reach (currently) is a Winchester 1897 12 ga, an SBR .300 Blackout (it is adapted for a suppressor but I don't keep one on it and that is locked in the safe so probably would not be used) and the two 1911s I carry daily. More stuff in the...
I cannot improve on that so I'll just say "ditto" (especially on the Kinetic Energy part - a very misleading property). Regards the original post about gelatin do understand that 10% ordnance gelatin represents porcine muscle as to penetration comparison - neither critters nor people are made...
I shot a Raccoon with Federal 50 gr. frangible factory ammo - the wound only went one inch deep though it was more than 2" wide. It may have eventually died but I ended up chasing it down and killing it with a pistol so it would not suffer.
There is not a single frangible round I'd trust my...
I find it a little hard to believe about the 9mm. Any good gun with the right ammo (Hollow points: Federal or Winchester) will do the deed. Also, don't forget to practice. You won't hit anything regardless of the caliber or the ammo if you don't work at it...

Can anyone tell me what original pre war sights would be most commonly found on this rifle?
--------------------------------
I have one made in 1936 in 30 Govt' 06, and it has a Lyman Folding rear sight on the barrel. I am guessing a lot of them had Lyman or Redfield Apeture...
Tried them some 30 years ago. 90 gr Sierras, I think it was with Unique. They clocked over 1400 fps (though I did not get to actually chronograph them until 1976). Like others are saying - they would sort of disappear when they hit something. They did shoot flat out to 100 yards but I would...
Your date sounds right. According the the George Madis "little red book" 1941 production began with #31676 and 1942 began with 50754 (there were 7452 made in '42 and 776 made in '43.
Tough call on whether to rebuild or restore. I just purchased a .220 swift made in '60. That one is not so...
WESHOOT2;
I know exactly what you mean.
It is sort of like the case of John Smith, who showed up at the Pearly Gates and asked St. Peter to let him in.
St. Pete says: "I don't have you down here for any outstanding acts that would allow your admitance. Did we miss something?" (I know...

My 9x19 ammo is not 'insufficient'
Regardless of the caliber I might use, I believe in the 'empty until you get the correct response" method..

That's a sound enough plan, so long as one is not making himself a good target (by standing still) or...
Sure, a 9mm is insuficient. If the goal is to instantly incapacitate a dangerous human attacker all handgun rounds - including the .454 Casul and the .480 Ruger - are insufficient, unless you hit the brain or upper part of the spine. Most rifles and shotguns are better but still not perfect...
I just use Starline .460 Rowland brass. It is slightly different in length but not enough to worry about....least not in my .451 Detonics barrel - I have some .451 brass, I have not tried it in the Rowland Conversion.
Best regards,
Jim H.
The "cup based" bullet tbeb is reffering to probably comes from a conversation we had about loading hollow based wadcutters backward.
Like many other I have found the typical HBWC to so heavy toward the nose (which of course would be the base if inverted) that they tend to tumble at any...
I keep hearing folks say you have to shoot ball in a 1911. I have not found that to be the case. True enough, when someone brings out ammo that they just stick any old bullet in and pay no attention to the ogive there may be problems but Winchester, Remington and Federal make JHPs that feed...
Nope. You may hear of these things more simply because there are more of them - the only guns that come close to being as prolific are the S&W M-10 and the Browning P-35. Mechanics probably work on more Fords and Chevy's also...big surprise.
Now to be sure, there are some pretty junky...
I have one that is completely original (except that it had Hogue stocks). It shoots SilverTips into about 1" groups at 25 yards and hits just about the sights.
Based on this, I found another one which had been roundbutted - it however does not shoot nearly as well. About 2 to 2.25" at 25...
