Not too late. I recently built a '74 using an AK Builder kit with a US chrome lined barrel and an NDS receiver. With a Tapco trigger, grip and some rivets I spent about $650.
I'm sitting here looking at a couple like new circle 10 mags that cost $25 each.

Strip the bolt down. Degrease it completely and lube it well. Use grease in the slots where the bolt head rides in the bolt body. I would scrub the chamber really well too.
I can't argue with your results Reloadron, that Garand stock looks really good. No way I could soak a wood stock in water though, I would be scared it would warp or something.
