First shot with mine I held it away, pointed down, with eject opening also away from anything important.
If it is a bolt action can it open up and do damage = IF the bolt completely closes on the cartridge?
About loosening tight actions, Valve lapping compound you find at auto parts stores works well, and probably courser grit so faster acting. My 1943 Mosin 91/30's bolt rubbed the reciever extremely hard while cocking, I hand fitted it by filing first the imperfections on the bolt, then matching...
Are the steel/ berdan primed cartridges able to take more pressure than newer "brass" used for distance/target shooting? Thanks- the bookmobile will be by soon, then most of my questions will not be necessary.
Also the surplus ammo I am using seems to be very dirty, soap and water works...
One group I was with used the parts cleaner in the Motor Pool for cleaning M16a's. Then blow dry and oil it quickly after- I guessed to keep finger prints to a minimum.\ Viagra wasn't even thought of way back then.

NOT a gunsmith! But a few years of machining and metal finishing makes it fun to see how a weapon might be "better". The only two gun/ weapons that I would attempt modifications- so far, needed the change and well not allot of money involved.

You may think of you rifle as "Art" w/ a function. I just refinished a Mosin 91/30 stock and found under the dark stain and Laquer a beautiful piece of wood. TRU oil in my opinion made it easier getting the factory- dark stain out. Tung oil is a quality wood preserving material too. Keep at it...
