how many rounds to wear in a 686 Plus?

None. It will be fine out of the box.

    Which six? 686 or 36?

I first purchased a 686+ 4" for home defense. I now have four of them, two with no locks, two with locks. They are great revolvers (the lock version is also my home defense weapon). One thing to consider is who may need to use the weapon besides you. That was another reason I went with the...

    Which six? 686 or 36?

The "lock failure" is overblown. Thank you Internet. I have several Smiths with the lock, and I have shot thousands of rounds. Not one failure. I do not understand how people can be so concerned about "lock" failures on revolvers and then rely on Semi-autos. I have some very reliable...

S&W J frame (aluminum frame) round counts?

Almost 800 through my 637 and 455 through my 442. Probably 80% +P. No problems.

    S&W 638 & Big Hands- solutions?

Try the grips that come with the larger J-Frames (e.g., model 60): http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_766272_-1_758003_757843_757837_ProductDisplayErrorView_N THe boot grips on the airlites are good for concealment. I have the same problem that you...

    S & w 686

Hotshot10, You have your answer. I also have a 686+ 4". Great gun - accurate and smooth. You won't go wrong with it.

    S&W 686 4 in. Barrel Stopping Power

Jake, I have the 686+ 4 inch for home defense with the stock rubber Hogue grips. After much research, I decided to use .38 special +P for defensive loads (Remington Golden Sabers). I've shot about 1000+ rounds of both .38 and .357 loads through the gun, of various types. While the .357...

Crud Ring (38spc in 357mag) - How Damaging To Keep Clean?

I have a 686 4". I clean after every shoot. 5-10 minutes. I take a 44 brush for the cylinder, dipped in hoppes, then I use 44 patches. Never had a problem. Ditto with my 1894CSS. I doubt you need to clean after every shoot, but it avoids the need for "deep cleanings" that may be...

"Ding" in new GP100 forcing cone...opinions...

If you buy more guns, you will find little imperfections, mostly due to machining. As another posted noted, it is not uncommon for owners of new guns to disassemble and polish numerous surfaces, remove burrs, etc. Imperfections on the internal are usually no big deal (cosmetic imperfections on...

Pick a Revolver from TV or Movie

Dirty Harry's SW Model 29, 6.5 inch barrel (but Nickel plated, not blued). In fact, I did pick it - I bought a used SW 29 Classic of this make for my 44th birthday. Got a couple of hundred rounds through it - very accurate. One purchase in which I know I will never look back.

    Good self defense round for a SW 637 (.38 +p 1.875 barrel)

Thanks for replies, and the links to the comparisons. Looks like I have several good choices to choose from; I'll have to see what shoots best from my snub.

    Good self defense round for a SW 637 (.38 +p 1.875 barrel)

I have a little 637 J frame for carry. Curious as to what is a good round for the gun. Today I was shooting some SB .38 Special 158 grain full metal jacket rounds for practice. When I was shooting from my colt Agent, the holes were nice and round in the target. But when I shot from the 637...

Colt Agent w/loose (?) cylinder crane

I fabricated a spring from the mainspring of a Swingline stapler. I removed the stapler spring, extended it so it had some "expansion" memory, and then turned it so one end screws into the detent. Then I just clipped the spring links off the other end until 1) the crane lock screw seated...

Colt Agent w/loose (?) cylinder crane

Tonight I managed to separate the detent from the crane lock screw using a magnet to pull out the detent. There is no spring, so that's the problem. The detent just sits far back in the screw. Numrich is sold out. Anyone suggest a handy replacement spring and where I can get one? I...

Colt Agent w/loose (?) cylinder crane

Thanks. That appears to be it. I took out the crane lock screw and it appears that that the detent and spring are jammed inside the screw. Almost as though the screw is on solid piece. That's the problem.

Colt Agent w/loose (?) cylinder crane

I just came into possession of my father's 1983 Colt Agent .38 special. I have noticed that when the revolver is open (released the cylinder so that the crane is rotated open and the cylinder can be loaded/unloaded), the crane can move forward several millimeters. This causes the cylinder to...
