Bullet Drop from a tower blind??

Wow! That's some spectacular double talk! Where is the bullet dropping from? How did it get there if it didn't rise? Bullets do rise. I'm sorry if that simple statement bothers some, there is always some implications that folks think there is something magic or unexplained going on -...

    50mm vs 40mm objective lens?

Quality of the glass and coatings being equal, the additional diameter objective lens is useful only for running higher magnification in very low light. I have a 56mm Trijicon on the rifle I use to night hunt pigs (legal in Texas). That is the only rifle/scope set-up where the additional...

Bullet Drop from a tower blind??

    Who's arguing? We're having a discussion :). David

Bullet Drop from a tower blind??

Agreed 100%, but the fact is that every rifle that is set-up to hit a target at any give distance consistent with the light of sight (the aiming point) is aimed upward at a shallow angle. The bullets do rise until gravity stops them and then pulls them downward. I similarly get tired of...

Bullet Drop from a tower blind??

Wrong! Bullets most certainly do rise. Discussing ballistics relative to the axis of the bore and then telling everyone that bullets don't rise is ridiculous. Most people don't use the departure angle of the projectile to determine if a projectile is rising because you can't see the departure...

best illuminated reticle rifle(deer/pig gun) scope?

Hard to beat the Trijicon! You don't have to get the triangle, you can get the much smaller dot in either a regular reticle or a mil-dot. I have the regular dot and find that it works great without limiting your range. David

Bullet Drop from a tower blind??

Shooting at steep angles (up or down) will make the rifle shoot high. It's something to worry about when shooting sheep in the mountains at 450 yards w/ a 50deg angle - it's a non factor from a 14' tower blind at 100 yards. Don't worry about it, your rifle will hit essentially the same POI. David

Velocity, Barrel Length and the "Book"

To further muddy the water, expansion ratio can have a significant effect on barrel length vs velocity. The expansion ratio - Expansion ratio is the case volume plus bore volume, divided by case volume. The smaller the number the more critical barrel length is. A 358 win and a 243win both...

    Ideas on the Accu-Trigger?

I have limited experience w/ the accutrigger - the only one I've ever tried is on my Savage model 93 17hmr. Likes: It is a very good hunting trigger. I've shot benchrest before, I know what a good trigger is and it's not in that league - but it's not supposed to be. It's about as good as a...

    sighting in 30-06

Leave it alone. It should be shooting roughly 0.25" low at 25, 0.5" high at 50 yards based on your described zero. In other words - perfect! David

    Winchester 70 Featherweight vs Deluxe?

I looked at some featherweights last year. The wood on the standard FW and the stainless FW was very plain, straight grain almost no figure. The deluxe was a very noticeable upgrade. Nice figure, little bit of burl, higher quality oil finish vs the laquer on the standard. I have no idea if...

    Help w/ Hunting Yotes

Most of the yotes I've taken, whether in open areas or thick woods will try to circle downwind of the call to make their approach. In thick woods usually getting the caller and decoy 40 yards out is enough, though it tends to get exciting - often times the coyotes tend to pop out very close...

    .270 Snap caps in a .30-06

Well you see Johnny, there was a little pause between hitting the quote and go advanced buttons and actually typing my response (those pesky kids again). After I tended to my children's needs I just sat back down and finished typing my post and hit the reply button. I didn't realize that you...

    .270 Snap caps in a .30-06

Still planning on pulling the trigger on a round in the chamber and not expecting it to go off - not a safe practice, no matter how many times you check it. How many times have you made a simple addition error when balancing your checkbook (or similar situation) and been unbale to find it even...

anyone shot deer with the 120 ballistic tip 7mm

Never tried the 120's - I have killed quite a few deer and pigs w/ the 140 BT's out of my 7mm-08. I finally swapped to the 140 accubonds because I had a couple of "failures" with BT's. The "failures" were DRT, bang flops, but I found the BT's had blown up and all I found were pieces. Stupid...

    Smart phone = bad hunting?

Funny, I feel just the opposite. I find it far easier to spend time in the stand I have a smart phone to play with. I stay longer, hunt more. I even bring my netbook and aircard in some of my nicer box blinds! David

    .270 Snap caps in a .30-06

Firing pins break - I am not of aware of any centerfire designs where dryfiring will result in premature firing pin damage but admit I am not familiar with every design out there. I am a BIG believer in dry firing, dry fire my rifles a lot, don't use snap caps, never experienced a broken firing...

    .270 Snap caps in a .30-06

They're worse than worthless - they teach people to get in the habit of pulling the trigger on a round in the chamber and to not expect it to go off. What damage is believed to be caused by dry firing a center fire rifle? David
