I'm thinking user error. Given that some of them would have been better off throwing the pistol at the targets, I'm guessing there is limp-wristing happening.

I've read in some articles that Dr Reid uses a revolver because Matthew Gray Gubler ( the actor who plays Dr Reid) likes "vintage" things and wanted to have Reid like more vintage things. He felt the revolver was more vintage and fit with his style more.
