Thanks for the comments and votes! GE, H&H got it right, sheep is some of the best. I think it's better than elk, and that says a lot. Hey, I would've gotten to 125 yds, 50, whatever if the terrain allowed, but sometimes that's the way it is in the high country. With a good rifle, good rest...

    Opinions wanted on Nikon binoculars

I agree w/ the opinions expressed thus far... Nikon has a huge line... all the way from cheap to the LX L's which rival the best in the world which part of the line are you looking at? basically, if you spend >200 on binos these days, you're going to get a pretty good pair (assuming...

Cold steel and the lott O hog.

interesting thread, I'd wondered what those Cold Steel spears were used for sounds like they can be quite humane, I had heard this was true when deer are run with dogs and speared in Europe as well must be quite the rush closing in on the dogs with the cornered hog!

    Recommendations for elk hunting

the atcheson's suggestion is a great idea http://www.atcheson.com/ and RMEF is indeed a great organization, and the banquets I've been to are fun, a good way to meet other elk hunters in your area

Factory 7mm Mag ammo for elk?

rock, have fun and good luck on your hunt you might pick up a PAST recoil pad (straps on over your shoulder) for the bench work, I use one when I'm checking out loads w/ my big game rifles, makes a big difference in helping avoid developing a flinch, shooting well, etc. Cheers, KJ

Factory 7mm Mag ammo for elk?

I don't know why the 160 partition isn't listed w/ large/heavy game on their website, it is in the last Federal paper catalog I've got and the 2005 catalog pdf they have online, looks like a mixup they have the 150 gameking listed as light and the 165 as medium heavy game, jackets could be...

Factory 7mm Mag ammo for elk?

bullets that don't have the lead core bonded to the copper jacket are prone to fragmenting at high velocities, I don't think the gamekings are bonded (at least the older ones) the first solutions to this problem were modifications to the jacket where a portion of the jacket is pushed in to...

Hi, I've got a photo of the ram I was fortunate enough to get this year that made it into the finals of a photo contest. I was told this was an active forum and I might pick up some votes here from hunters. I’d appreciate your vote. Or, vote for another photo if you like. :) KJ's photo...

Question for other hunters: am I alone in this?

I think part of the satisfaction of hunting is being away from creature comforts and surmounting these types of fears. I've spent a lot of time off trail in wilderness, and it has gotten easier. There have been a few times where my mood could have been considered near panic when I got...

Factory 7mm Mag ammo for elk?

I could see that the gamekings would work fine with a bit of range, and especially if they didn't hit a heavy bone first I've killed a couple elk w/ the failsafes and they worked fine, they penetrated really well (better than the partitions) but didn't leave as big of a wound channel and it...

    Best Shooting sticks??

I've got the steady stix (sitting size) and like them a lot, they aren't quite as stable as the heavier model pictured in the post at top of thread, but work well and are lighter to carry it seems like the tradeoff with these things is easy to carry vs. heavier and more stable for shooting off of

Factory 7mm Mag ammo for elk?

I'm with the earlier posts, 160 partition federal premiums are tough to beat on elk re. accuracy, they usually do pretty well, and don't have to be as accurate as a whitetail bullet given the vitals are so much bigger
