    .243 and IMR 4831.

Best load I ever got with my .243 was with H380 and 100gr bullets. 4831 works great in just about any rifle cartridge from the 6mms on up. You can hardly go wrong. Back in the day we loaded 8x57s with 170gr bullets by scooping the case full of H4831. You couldn't get enough of the powder in...

Any reason not to shoot the .257 Roberts +p stuff out of a Remington 760?

Shoot it and find out. I sincerely doubt it would harm you or your rifle. Those cartridge companies have some pretty good lawyers who would doubtlessly not let their clients sell anything that would hurt any good-condition .25 Bob built by a factory.

Lever guns - hating on Henry

Okay, here we go. When my retirement came through I decided to treat myself to a present so I bought a brand new Henry 45-70 carbine. I thought that even though the wood finish looked like sprayed on plastic (probably is) and the 'bluing' was rather cheesy-looking, most new guns in the $750...

    Lever action Henrys comparisons.

I just bought a new Henry 45-70 and it is a fine piece.

    Stop calling it gouging.

It is not gouging. Yes, it is all based on free market economic principles. We don't need the items. If you can't afford it, you can't buy it. Nonetheless, our whole economic system is based on good old fashioned avarice. Thats the way it is.

Vintage optics for a vintage rifle

I have an original Stith side mount for old Win. Mod 70 rifles. Sure is a cool mount. Wish I had an old Mod 70 and a Lyman Alaskan to mount on it.. Cool set up, bushmaster.

    Remington...what happened to them?

I have not bought a brand new gun in many a year. All of my guns are old. I prefer to buy older, used guns and have them checked out by a competent smith. I love old sporterized Mausers, Springfields, Enfields and Krags. I also look for older Savage Mod 99s and Win 94s. The quality was there...

    Albino Deer Hunter Angers residents

Wasn't there an old Bob Newhart show episode wherein he killed the 'Sacred White Buck' with his car?

    .30-06 Handi with iron sights?

Buy a set of iron sights and have them installed on the Handi by any competent gunsmith. Lyman sights are my personal favorite. LOTS cheaper than a rechambering.

I dont get the big GUNS?

Ankeny, Why doesn't your outfit put minimum caliber or chambering limits on it's customer's choice of weapon? Probably lose a bunch of 'em, I imagine. Maybe the various fish and game depts. that are looking at legalizing .22CF cartridges have the same problem. .22CF guns are mighty popular...

I dont get the big GUNS?

I guess I don't understand why anyone would be concerned with what somebody else shoots. As long as someone's gun is legal for the game they are after it's their business, in my opinion. I was raised by a gun nut - they called them 'cranks' back then - and I grew up shooting many, many...

Is .243 enough for mule deer???

The original question was about the cartridge, not the shooters. A .243 with a good bullet is entirely adequate for mule deer. Is the shooter adequate? That's a different question. If one is shooting a muzzle loader, a bow or a single-shot cartridge gun (regardless of the chambering) one must...

What percentage of your guns are "synthetic"?

I was going to say 0%, but I just remembered a friend recently gave me a Mossberg 12ga pump that has a plastic stock. All of my other guns are wood/blued steel and I would never buy a gun with stainless steel or a synthetic stock. Just an aesthetic thing.

    Shock effect on elk

Several years ago I was hunting a certain large whitetail buck I had seen on the logging road behind my house. I was climbing a pretty steep hill and stopped to take a break and eat a Tootsie Roll. I unwrapped the candy, popped it into my mouth, looked up and two cow elk were just standing there...

    Could your weapon handle this?

My father was the commander of a tank destroyer outfit during WWII. He told me that after the war he met a German officer who had been at Stalingrad. The German told my dad 'Didn't make any difference what weapons we had, we didn't have enough ammo to kill all those Russians anyway'.

    Best SURVIVAL rifle

Personally I'd opt for my drilling - 16x16x22 Sav HiPowerAI. Otherwise I would go for the simplest single-shot bolt action .22LR I could find - mine is an old Western Field. Or else a .45 cal flintlock muzzle loader, so long as I had lead and a keg of FFF. I can find and make flints. I...

Best Gun for Tent Camping in Bear Country

I live in the same neck of the woods as Alaska444 and sleep in the woods (usually under a tarp) several times a year and I usually just have my hunting rifle and/or my pistol with me. The pistol is a 6" S&W Mod 19 .357. However, I have never had problems with bears, nor have any of my hunting...

Who carries a sidearm when hunting?

I don't generally wear bibs. I hunt with a single-shot rifle so I carry a 6" Mod 19 S&W in a regular old holster on my right hip as a back up or for emergencies. I generally load it with 150gr cast bullets and 2400 powder in .38 Spl. cases. They are somewhat hotter than .38 +P but not quite up...

There are any over .400 cal African cartridge with good long range performance??

Gotta agree with 56hawk. A 500gr bullet from a .460 Wby. leaving the muzzle at 2600fps should have close to the same trajectory as a .308 shooting a 180gr spitzer. And the .308-180gr combo is commonly shot at 600 yards which is, to me at least, long range. Of course the .460 requires over...
