    Wyoming antelope by car?

That's a good looking buck. Did you see many other hunters out the first week? In the third week of October, I had the unit to myself.

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

Finally got to try out the Game Getter adapter. The results were pretty impressive. At 25 yards, using the "brown" blanks, I got a 3" 5 shot group. 3 of the shots were within 1.3". And they were hitting at exactly the same POI as my full 140 gr elk loads. The "green" blanks were 2.8" 5...

    Improving follow through

What is a good standard to judge good follow through by, and how can I improve? 90% of my shooting is limited to 200 yd max and from the bench (local range rules). I am firing a fairly light 270 Win (8#'s fully loaded and rigged). No problems staying on target with .223 and rimfires. From...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

On second thoughts, I did hunt one tiny WIA, but only because it happened to border the BLM I was on. It was clearly marked as WIA. I don't recall the BLM having big BLM signs, but they did all have the same type of signage and entrances so they were easy to find once you knew what to look for...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

I did not hunt the WIA's but did research them. The Game and Fish Dept has maps for each unit online but they don't offer a lot pf detail. They do have written boundary descriptions. I used these and a highlighter, to mark out the boundaries I was interested in on better maps. Also used a lot of...

There are some beaver ponds. We plan to set some lines out.

Snares have one major drawback. They don't tend to be very selective. I would just assume eat more PB to rats, and I don't want to have to deal with an angry skunk, porcupine, bobcat, etc.

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

Winner, winner, goat dinner! That might be the best idea I have heard this year. We were considering renting lamas, but I might lose my deposit if I returned it in a doggy bag...

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

I don't want this thread to take off on a tangent about the wisdom of backcountry pack in hunting (no pack animals), but A sidearm would add additionalal weight that I am trying to avoid. For the purposes of this thread, lets continue with the assumptions that my party will be truly prepared and...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

As I got into the Shoshone area, I knew that it must have been impressive. It was dark, but I still saw all of the "Be Bear Aware" signs, and lots of the ever present mule deer doe. That stretch of road felt like a slow motion rollercoaster. And long. I was thinking there would be plenty of...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

I completely butchered both animals right there in the river that morning, then let the meat soak in the water to get a head start on freezing while I seared some backstrap with grits for breakfast. It was cold enough that I had to keep stopping to break the ice of my knife blade. World class day!!

    Wyoming antelope by car?

Funny enough, the only Mulie buck I saw the whole week in WY came within inches of totaling my rental car the last night. He was a monster! Here are a few pics from the trip. The shots of the tent site are a deer bed that I found my first night to get out of the wind. The river / mountain...

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

Damn you, now you've got me thinking. I will have my grouse breast with some instant grits prepared with the broth and a little coffee for a red eyed gravy. I can't wait!

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

ChefJeff, A grouse would be oustanding. Sear the breast rare, then simmer the carcass for a little back woods broth. If I could eat like that every day of my trip, I would probably stop looking for elk altogether! At least until I started dreaming about those elk roasts...

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

Thanks guys, here is a link to this question on a cast bullet site. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?p=1824671#post1824671 I am going to order an adapter that allows you to fire sized buckshot using .22 powder driven tool blanks. The kit comes with a tool that allows standard...

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

I posted Q on the "Boolits" site. I will share what I find out. I keep finding lots of references to a book by Ken Waters (Pet Loads) for just this type of thing. Maybe I'll just have to order the book. Also most of the loads I can find references to are for reduced recoil deer hunting. These...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

Binatilstate, I hope the cost isn't what's holding you back. I did it on a shoe string. All left over tags and public land. Plenty of left over mule deer and pronghorn doe tags for under $40 each. Even a good number of pronghorn buck tags for about $250 or a little less. I was just in it for...

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

Also, if anyone already is loading something similar in the Houston or Beaumont area, I will be happy to purchase a box of something like this at a premium price. It sounds like a fun challenge, but no sense reinventing the wheel. Just send me a PM.

.270 Small game loads for pack-in hunt

I have seen the sub sonic whisper ammo. I just haven't seen anything in 270. Agreed, there are plenty of loads out there for plinking that will group to the same relative point of aim out to 100 yards. The projectile will still have to cross the line of sight twice on its way to the target, no...

    Wyoming antelope by car?

WAY overdue update I apologize for not updating this thread after my trip last year, but just rejoined the community and thought I would share the results for anyone researching old threads. Yes, antelope by car is very doable, and I encourage it for anyone who may be limited to this option...
