Optimum size for a muzzlebrake is 0.020" larger than the bore diameter. Optimum brake inside diameter for a .308 would be .328" and the optimum size for a .338 would be .358".
To OP, the bigger brake will work but won't see the greatest possible reduction of recoil.
Mine would be an 1879 Argentine Remington #5 Rolling Block in .43 Spanish. Picked it up earlier in the year at the NRA auction. It has all the factory stamps, a full vernier tang sight, and an extremely clean bore.
