    Natural Lube?!?!

If you research Colonial and early post RevWar history you'll find many references to using "Sweet Oil" for firearms lubrication. This is nothing more than Olive Oil, and it was imported and dispersed throughout the settled regions. Bear oil and deer tallow were also heavily used. The olive oil...

    1868 muzzleloader

Please post photos. With these you can expect help, but not much otherwise. Take a shot of the name on the barrel, the full lockface (right side-also the left side showing how the screws are attached) Entry thimble where the ramrod goes into the stock, the muzzle area, Buttplate, full view, both...

    Iowa Deer Classic.....pics

What we see here is an expression of overall soil fertility. Genetics plays a role also, naturally, but the amount of P205 in the soil is directly correlated with antler mass....not points, but mass. Sorry, but Bama or Jawja or Fladah just ain't got it in the dirt!

hang fire, are you associated with Jim Chambers and Barbie? Thinkin' I probably know you from past events, etc.

History of the Confederate Powder Works

If I remember correctly the man who was responsible for putting togather this Powder Works was a Swiss national, and not a Southerner by birth. And as for a supply of Cottonwood (Populus deltoides) the Savannah River Bottomland north and south of Augusta, Georgia was and still is full of this...

    casting

You know, rolling that ball between tiles might make sence! I'm gonna try that! Trying to keep your eyes on squirrels up a tree and reloading a little .32cal keeping the sprue up can be difficult! (Yes, I know, I could buy swaged balls, but I won't)! For what it's worth, though..... Almost...

    Flinlock timing

jaguar, Loyalist and winter are, IMO, pinging on target. A year or so ago on a Message Board composed of really professional muzzleloader builders and competition shooters-mostly flintlocks-time-lapse photography was shown of what actually takes place when the trigger is tripped on a...

    Black Powder and Straight Razors

Never shaved with a straight razor in all my years! However, I do have a patch knife made from one-won it in a blackpowder chunkgun match years ago-and it's excellent for its intended use. The hollow ground blade is what does the trick! Much better than a regular knife blade IMO. Straight razor...

    casting

In my opinion, based on experience with my flintlocks, keeping the sprue up is easier than putting it down. I can keep it centered straight with the bore with it up.

    .650 roundball mould?

Among several others I have a couple of .650 round ball moulds made by Rapine Bullet Mould Mfg. Co. in East Greenville, Pa., 215-679-5413. But .650cal.....that's what I use in my 16ga. fowlers. Wouldn't you want a little larger round ball for a 12ga? Just thinkin'.....

    Armadillos anyone ?

Yea, lopaka.....! I went through SERE at Colorado Springs back in '70, and could I have caught a 'dillo OR a mountain lion, I'd have eaten that sucker in a heartbeat!

    Armadillos anyone ?

They may reach you yet, hogshead. The darn things are up on the Cumberland Plateau around Nashville, Tennessee now. If you're in the Southern Mountains, Franklin to Ashville, you may escape, but I'd be surprised if the darn things aren't already in the coastal plains and piedmont of NC. This...

    Smoothie Deer

Way to go, Myamoto! I, too, have used nothing but flintlocks for well over 30 years. And, being recently retired from forest and wildlife management work, I've done a bunch of culling for clients over the years and use nothing but my flintlocks....got about a dozen of 'em! Use a good quality...

What accuracy should I expect in a Traditions Crockett .32?

If you will listen to what longrifle346 has told you, you will be successful. There is no better way for someone inexperienced to get up to speed rapidly than to get Dutch Shoultz' material and "devour" it. Competition Over-The-Log matches are fired at 60 yards. If you aren't capable of...

    Ghillie suit

Ron James, you are partially right, but not totally! A new on-going study just a few months old is being done by the School of Natural Resources (forestry & wildlife) at the University of Georgia, funded by the national auto insurance industry, to determine if any specific color will register...

Video - Shooting the Trapdoor Springfield

The 1873 Trap Door! I always have a touch of sadness when I'm reminded of this piece! There was one in our attic when I was a kid growing up. (1940's-50's) My Grandfather who reared me kept it secretly hidden because it was "stolen government property"! His Dad had been one of the Ring...

    Mystery Gun

Stophel is correct. Never was a flintlock. Back action locks came in1840ish. Maybe a little earlier, but not by much. I see nothing to indicate anything but a cheap, probably Belgian made for export single barrel caplock.

    Mannlicher stocks? Opinions and pictures?

Wish I could post photos of mine! At his death a close friend willed several pieces to me, and one is a 1912 Oberndorf 8mm Mauser, 98k action, Mannlicher stock with two small schwaubels (spelling?) underneath. It fits right in with my early Reading and Lancaster flintlocks. To me it's as...

How Fast Does A Flintlock Fire

Great, Pete D! Mike is an excellent builder. I'm sure you will be pleased! I have a 16ga fowler with a 51 inch barrel made for me by David Dodds several years ago, and it's awesome. Is the one being built by Mike in Grindslade's book by any chance?

How Fast Does A Flintlock Fire

Up side down.....that's interesting! A year or so ago there were time lapse photos on one of the muzzleloader websites (I think it was the ALR) that showed the powder in the pan igniting and the PRB leaving the muzzle before the frizzen had fully flipped foward. The average time of several shots...
