Yes it's a M81. The rear of the bolt looks like the #4 newer style. IIRC that puts it later 50s to early 60s. Dig around on the net for "bolt styles". You can marrow it down more if it has plain or Micro groove rifling.
Just needs an iPhone 15 Pro Max, a $700 artisanal hatchet, and some $2,500 Nicks Boots and he'll be ready for the wine tasting before the Sundance premier of Kneecap
Needs a horse too.
If the accuracy is ok for him use it. It,s not dangerous. I have several old .22 rifles with a ring or slight bulge that shoot fine. A ring is easy to see in the bore but the barrel may not seem bulged. But if you close your eyes and run your finger tips along the barrel you'll feel it even if...
For the price it's a steal. I picked up a 18" barrel model for HD to supplement another HD shotgun. I put a side saddle on it and a 12" LOP Hogue but stock. Works great from shoulder or lower. Forget a pistol grip.
Spend 150 bucks or less for a barrel for your Maverick. Cheap, plain shotgun that works. The Clays guys may snicker and point at it until you beat them. Then they will just be PO'd. Thats the best part.;)
Why take choices away from shooters thats currently there? Some like more smaller pellets for a denser pattern and/or less penetration in a urban setting. Don't give the bean counters any ideas. They may think one size bullet for a caliber would be a good idea.

I got my standard 181 series Mini-14 in "76". I was 15 and told my mom "It's just a bigger .22". Still have it original. Gotta include this.

I don't have a problem using that stuff reasonably and cleaning it up. But there has been ranges around here damage by using to much of it and blowing up target racks and other damage. Plus most ranges around here have neighbors that are used to the sound of gunfire and are ok with it. But you...
I,m tired of slobs and morons :) that shoot glass, containers flammable liquids, those explosive binary targets and leave big messes that makes all the normal hunters and target shooters look bad.
