Yes, 9mm HP should be more than fine.
One thing to consider, in K*a*l*i*f*o*r*n*i*a* there are certain areas that you can only hunt with non-lead (i.e. copper) bullets...in a few years that may apply to the whole state. Some people mess up if they choose to carry in a lead-free zone...
