    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

Really makes you think. If this thread is locked, I won't mind. I think I've gotten the information I needed. I appreciate all who've replied. I think my main takeaway from this is that I will stick to Glocks and revolvers without manual safeties. My Glock 19, 21, and Colt Python have always...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

23 years old is spry and young for a military aircraft! The C130 stationed nearby that I have a long running relationship with has been flying every day since 1964.

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

It's not a stupid question at all. The overwhelming virtue of the 1911 that has me still wanting to carry one is how well I shoot with it. That said, the combined wisdom of posts in this thread is starting to convince me that I'm better off with my Glock 19 (or my Glock 21 if I want .45). It...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I don't buy the "capacity to weight ratio" thing. I prefer larger/heavier guns for any given capacity or caliber because they're easier to shoot quickly with accuracy. I like to conceal the biggest/heaviest pistol I am willing to carry consistently. The shootability of the 1911 outweighs any...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

My Colt 1991 feeds empty cases flawlessly from the Wilson 47D's, just checked. Maybe I should try some Tripp Research 7 rounders and shoot another 1000 rounds.

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I shoot the 1911 better than anything else. It's like a laser. Everything about it is utterly perfect except for my experience with reliability. As for limp wristing, I highly doubt it. Glocks are much more prone to limpwristing and I've never had that happen over tens of thousands of rounds...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

Except it is, and organizations all over the world have mean round count reliability requirements for any firearm they adopt. Random stoppages can happen to any firearm, no matter how reliable, due to variations in ammunition, etc. Shooting at least a thousand rounds is a way to be reasonably...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

Requiring a high round count for reliability doesn't mean you don't practice malfunctions during training. Of course we do that. That's a false dichotomy. But there is no getting around that it's better to have a reliable pistol that you don't need to clear malfunctions with when you might need...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I must admit I'm envious of those of you with 1911s that've had 2000 failure-free shots. To me having a 1911 that reliable would be the Holy Grail of handguns. I'm frustrated with my experiences with 1911s when I have so many other pistols that run 100% all the time for thousands of rounds. I...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I disagree. I had a Springfield Loaded 1911. Took it to the range and fired 300 rounds with no problems. The next two range trips had 1 failure to feed each, and it turned out that the extractor was improperly tuned at the factory. 200 rounds is not enough to verify a pistol's reliability, in my...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I also take what Larry Vickers says with a big grain of salt. Yes, he has military experience worthy of respect, but when it comes to products, he's a paid spokesman for them, much like Tom Selleck and Henry Winkler with those reverse annuity mortgage scams. Thanks to all of you who answered my...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

Yes, I thoroughly clean any gun I shoot after every range trip, and with this particular Colt 1911 all range trips have seen less than 500 rounds through it.

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

Really the "total" requirement is 1000 shots before I will be comfortable carrying a handgun, but if I can't get it to go 2000 rounds without a failure, I begin to think something is wrong. I shoot a lot and often, and 2000 rounds isn't really that much to me (well, it is for my pocket book, but...

    1911 Reliability for Self Defense?

I've owned 5 1911s. I love shooting them, I love the looks, the history, and everything about them. I really would love to carry one as my primary CCW. The only thing that makes me hesitant is the reliability factor. I've owned 3 Colts, a Springfield Loaded, and a Dan Wesson Valor. All of these...

    Mosin Nagant problem?

I changed the two magazine springs/followers. I can still get it to jam with the other magazine follower. Interestingly, I can also get my "older" 1943 Mosin to do the jam, though it's a bit harder to get to happen and it seems a bit easier to clear.

    Thanks a lot. I'll have a look.

    Mosin Nagant problem?

It was actually originally an accident when I was loading it via stripper clip.

    Mosin Nagant problem?

I think this is what's going on, because the round beneath it also pushes forward. Is this acceptable? It only does it when I push the nose down.

All I have is Russian surplus ammo

    Mosin Nagant problem?

Ah, so my rifle does have a problem... That's a disappointment.
